@Whatever Overanalization? Character growth and characterization as you put it, was pretty obvious to many. And pretty enjoyable too in a "I'm touched" sort of way. Example: Fluttershy standing up to Iron Will without losing her being Fluttershy. I am in no way going to deny that Fluttershy turning into Flutterbat was not uber-fun to watch. In the contrary it was outstanding! I actually want to make a fanart of a bunch of stallions lining up on the side of the road wearing apple-garlands around their necks as Fluttershy does her groceries. Now, move on to the next poll please. There is a big discrepancy/inconsistency between the qualities that the franchise symbolize and the qualities that some comments have in this poll.

Hmmm, you guys notice that there is a lot of fanservice and nods from the animators and Hasbro in S4? First there is Flutterbat which is a nod from the animators and Hasbro that they know that bat-ponies are very popular with the fandom since "Luna Eclipsed." @Mojo Stop insulting my favorite pony, pinkie pie and AJ were both AWESOME in this episode, and they both learned a valuable lesson, pinkie is not mess, you guys are just too blinded by your hatred to pinke to see how great of a character she is. Fluttershy's only topping the poll because of Flutterbat. That's fine and everything but I think Applejack has stood out this season. She's moved up from 5th to 2nd for me overall and definitely 1st for this season. (Sorry Twi, but you jumped on a bandwagon in Bats! and all your alicorn princess power couldn't even get you a cab in Rarity Takes Manehattan.)

@NN Of course I watched the show. And sure everybody knows that the lesson is about not letting anyone peer-pressure you into anything, even if they are friends. That's just stating the obvious. It's stated in the end of the episode as Spike writes it down in their journal so its a no-brainer.
But if you truly watched the show, you'd see the not-so-obvious lesson. And that has something to do with AppleJack regretting her actions and doing a self-sacrifice. In the end, though it was a price to pay, she paid it - sacrifice a win in the Appleloosa fair for the sake of Fluttershy.

Hmpf... Im just going to ignore the polls from now on if they are really so easy to manipulate. Even if Rarity would win, which i would like because i liked her the most this season, i don't want her to win just because someone proxyvoted for her, and i guess the same is true for the most other fans and their favorites. Makes these polls completely pointless if they just show who can proxyvote the most.
@buu Well, it is impartial. I loved Fluttershy's moments this season, though Twilight would be a close second. The whole point of this poll is to see which character did you enjoy seeing most, and which character was enjoyed the most in the fandom. In order to be completely accurate, nearly everyone has to vote, including everyone who liked Fluttershy the most this season.
@VGI Did you even watch the episode? Fluttershy's lesson in Bats! was not let semeone pressure you into doing something that you don't think is right, even if everyone is against you. Seems like flutterbat was awesome it overshadows literally everything.

Pinkie Pie hasn't really gotten to do anything up until this point and Twilight's been Meh. Rarity has been pretty good and Fluttershy has only been visually appealing so far. She's more of a all flash no substance character.

This sucks. The question is best main character OF THE SEASON SO FAR. What has Rarity done? Apart from the last episode, she has done nothing. She has barely said anything in the episodes. What has FLuttershy done? Well she has certainly entertained us with her transformations and shit but nothing else. Rainbow Dash has been best to me although they made her look like some freaky fan in the Daring don't ep, but she has grown a lot and we´ve seen it SO FAR. I think Princess Twilight should be worst becouse SO FAR we haven't seen any progress of her, she hasn't even flown once.

Personaly i don't know if ep 8 or 7, because if someone feel that 7 have more value lesson Im ok with this. But episode 8 was so true, it hurts.

Really it was always close enough that there was no clear winner. When you have all of those other candidates the votes can go to, you've got to call a statistical draw if the leading ones are less than 3% apart.

True, "Bats" do have some solid moral lessons too, but thing is, the moral of the lesson is not directed towards one pony only.
If I were to choose a character to vote for based on "Bats!" I would have to make at least 2 votes; one for Fluttershy and one for AppleJack. But if I can only make one vote based on "Bats!" I would have to go for AppleJack because of the regret she experienced near the end and the action she took - sacrificing the Apple family's prize-winning apple just to get Fluttershy back (They ran out of regular-sized apples to lure Flutterbat in?)
Fluttershy really was more of the victim, and AppleJack was the recipient of the moral lesson's hammerhead-fall.
(Fluttershy turning into a vampire is awesome, but what lesson is there to learn with her turning batty? Don't be a victim to peer-pressure?)
I actually hold dearer the lesson that AppleJack received in "Bats!" which led her to act out a sort of self-sacrifice. "I've got to get my friend back no matter what!" Dang that is sweet!
Thing is, all of them received the lesson's hammerhead-fall in "Bats!" almost losing a friend to the nature of vampire fruit bats. Unfortunately we are only allowed to vote for one character only.
In "Rarity Takes Manehattan," the much of the lesson focuses on her; one episode and one pony to vote for. Easy. Plus I have more going on irl that has more to do with generosity and what-not so that makes it a bit biased for me. :D
Now that I have thought through it in comment-form, my next vote may be for AppleJack.
No love for Applejack? She's become the de facto leader in this season. Of course, it means Pinkie Pie's taking a back seat right now, but still, Applejack is doing something, right?

The poll results are pretty much even all week, and then suddenly there's massive changes, with Rarity's and Fluttershy's levels fluctuating madly. At this point? No way it's genuine.
It just begs the question, why? Why do people care enough about this fucking poll to bring in proxies and cheat to win? It's supposed to be a bit of fun and yet again people have gotten so worked up and serious about pretend horses that it's just become a point of frustration.
And it wouldn't bother me quite as much if Fluttershy had been the best this series. As Mojo's pointed out though, the big things about her this series have been admittedly fun yet gimmicky transformations. So sad really, it's a Rarity (feel free to hate mail me about that one) for Rarity to win these opinion polls, and when it looks like she's going to do so people have to go and fix the results. Now we'll never know the legitimate general opinion, we're just left with this skewed mess.

I don't know what reason would there be for tears Lumberden, this poll is so close for such a long time that if neither Flutters nor Rares get at least a 1% lead all of the sudden, i just consider them sharing the first place. I liked Rarity more so far this season, but im not going to cry lolrigged because Flutters might beat her in the poll. Rarity has always been my number one, and i don't need her to win every fan poll to reassure myself of that, nor do i care when some other pony has more fans. I would surely be happy if she would win this one, but im not going to complain if not.
@VGI Bats has its own decent morale lesson: don't give in to peer pressure when your better judgement says what your friends are telling you to do is wrong.
Peer pressure can make even decent people do some stupid or horrible things and people with self-esteem or confidence issues can be quite vulnerable to that.

Ultimately, after mulling it over among all the choices, it came to either Rarity or Fluttershy.
On one hand, HASBRO did a fan service in "Bats!"
But on the other, "Rarity takes on Manehattan" has a solid moral lesson that made me like MLP in the first place.
So, my vote goes to Rarity this time.

And you see, that was the point. People like you think it's only because she's cute, so I listed all other reasons why people like Fluttershy, and they're all true. Being cute is one reason of course, but there's much more to Fluttershy than just being cute (becaue honestly, everypony is cute in their own way). I don't blame you though, anyone might miss the appeal of a character that they don't care much about.

Geez, calm down, your fantardism is showing. Fluttershy didn't get mad earlier because her friends could handle themsmselves perfectly, but a little bug was helpless. She did get mad when her friends got cornered by a Dragon or Cockatrice in s1. There's also much more reaons to like Fluttershy than just her appearance being cute.
1. Not only her appearance but also her character and the way she act is cute (look for "moe" character)
2. Numerous iconic best comedy scenes in this show involve Fluttershy (cheering lesson, Luna visits Fluttershy, evil enchantress etc.)
3. She's ralatable, and so, often inspirational.
4. She helps those who nobody else cares about (like vampire fruitbats, manticores or fireflies)
5. There are so many twists to her character:
- An irony of a pegasus affraid of flying
- Flutterrage
- The stare
- Even ungly or monstrous animals get love
- "Freaky sewing skills"
- Friendship with a Spirit of Chaos
- Possible fruitbat vampirism

The only way Pinkie Pie could not be the best in season 4 is if she weren't in season 4, but as long as she's in the title sequence, she's got it in the bag.

The poll-hacking fanboy in me wishes I could honestly vote for one of my favorite three ponies, rather than someone from the middle of my "best ponies" list, but I have to admit-- Rarity has been a pretty strong character this season. Whether she's acting in a way that makes you want to slap some sense into her, being genuinely pleasant and even (*gasp*) generous, or acting the role of the cultured bad-ass, she leaves a definite impression behind most every time.

I do like flawed characters. Almost all of the ponies are flawed in their own way. I just see that they are very few spots on the show where Rarity is ACTUALLY generous.

Rarity first? What? That was just one episode, not a "season so far". She did pretty much nothing in the remaining seven. Same for Fluttershy. And they're both winning? Jesus.

Luna isn't a main character. She's a secondary character at best, considering she's in barely any episodes and doesn't do anything besides be evil in the first two.
Status for all of them:
I have a strong tie between Rainbow and Rarity.
I love Pinkie,but she's been pretty useless so far.
Spike is boring too.
Fluttershy:She's funny this season,but no.I would be disappointed if she was second because of Flutterbat.
Scootaloo ,Applejack,and Twilight have been pretty nice too.
Rarity wins it, not only for her performance in Manehattan, but in Power Ponies, and other episodes as well. It is also by default because some of the other characters have NOT been exceeding their norms.
Two things guys. First one until now We have 8/26 episodes, so it's very rushed vote which is the best season main character.
And second one, I'm a Rarity fan, and her last episode was great, but I put two better characters from what I've seen of this season: Twilight and Scootaloo.
Twilight assumed new responsabilities and achieved a new power source: the box. besides her new role like princess doesn't change her humility and her wishes for learning.
And Scootaloo, had a great advance like character, thanks to Rainbow Dash about downplay the possibility the orange filly might fly and be okay with the others CMC.
Therefore my personal poll would be: 1. Twilight, 2. Scootaloo, 3. Rarity, 4. Fluttershy and 5. Rainbow Dash.
RD still best pony in my opinion. :)
Tried to find Luna but she's not there. :( RD it is then.
I almost went with Rarity just because of the last episode, but other than that, she hasn't done much. Rainbow Dash has had the most well-rounded appearances in the season. She has had some great individual moments, like her fangirl-off with Twilight in Daring Don't, her exasperation with the CMC at the end of Flight to the Finish, and her quips in Rarity Takes Manehatten. She's had some interesting insights into her character, with her feeling inadequate in comparison to Daring Do, her geeking out over Daring Do and Henny of the Hills, and her getting scared of the castle in Castle Mane-ia. She had a decent lesson in Daring Don't. She had some good interactions with Applejack in Castle Mane-ia. And she got to be a mentor to Scootaloo in Flight to the Finish, which is rare for her.
If we're going by best written character of the season, right now, it's a three-way tie for me in no order: Rarity, Spike, and Scootaloo, so far.
You do realize that if you tossed Luna in there she would get 90% of votes? :P
Gotta say Rainbow Dash has been really good so far this season. And I'm saying that as a big Pinkie/Fluttershy fan who used to not like Dash. Her characterization has greatly improved since season 2.
Overall rarity is my #3 right now, but I just had to vote her #1 this season for her amazing episode. I honestly think twilight has been kinda... Off as a character so far this season but she would have been next then prob scoots (dem feels) otherwise pinkie has been more insane then usual XD and has not had her episode yet, flutterbat doesn't count as character development so fluttershy has not really done a lot, AJ hates animals apparently (with good reason) but has yet to have a good shining role yet (though I will admit she has been a good, supporting character in all episodes with her in them) . And Dash has been both role model and obsessed fan, and I adored her in flight to the finish but nothing special from her yet really. And no comment on the other cmc (haven't done a lot) and no comment on spike (never been a "spike person") and power ponies didn't change that for me. Feel free to disagree with me and/or counter argue. I'm always open minded.
Well it is clearly rarity only because of last episode but i'm hyped for the next few because Rainbow Dash will be taking a main character / main side character role and im expecting great things! Don't fail me now Hasbro!
