How would you grade the Sanitation Department's response to Tuesday's snowstorm?

I didn't understand why when the snow started earlier than anticipated the salt spreaders were "not" given the go ahead...If they were they sure weren't anywhere near the Mall or Annadale..

When it starts to snow the salt spreaders go out and salt the main roads. This is done until the supervisors feel it's time to go into the secondary roads. When there is more than 3 inches of snow on the floor, the regular garbage trucks start plowing. Until there is enough snow on the floor to plow there is no reason for a garbage truck to be moving. That's why u would see trucks parked. Now when the snow accumulates the plows start plowing the main roads then when the main roads are decent the plows also go to the secondary streets. Notice I didn't speak about the other streets. They are called tertiary streets. They are done last. They are done by what ever left over trucks sanitation has and by private contractors when the primary and secondary streets are clearly then the rest of sanitation goes there. By that time usually people are digging their cars out and the snow blocks the cars again. Look like it or not the main focus of snow removal is to get snow off the streets with the weather tech that we have today, people in this city should be more prepared. If you need to go to work leave earlier if u need essiantials buy them before the storm way before not the night before. If u don't need to go out stay home very simple things to follow. Rita don't get mad I personally plowed that street last snow storm more than once and there were still cars sliding. This happens. If it keeps snowing the only thing sanitation can do is try to contain the storm. When it is snowing you can't storm the storm. When it's over sanitation always cleans up. Now people cry for private clean up. Sanitation has private companies help during rough storms. Privates worked the past 2 storms already. So far the privates have been a huge disappointment. Hope this helped a little.

Rita--- "I was sliding all over the street and so was a giant SUV!!!!!"

ITS SNOW AND ITS SLIPPERY ASSHOLE!!!!!! Stay off the fucking street and let the women and men of the Sanitation do their job IDIOT!!!! Get a life

For everyone bashing the mayor , the mayor does plow the street nor did bloomberg, sanitation did a great job, due to the freezing temp made plowing more difficult, I can't understand how people complain about the streets being clear while it was 2 hours into the storm, really people it was -15 degrees what's the snow going to melt

  • mari - 10 years ago

Sanitation are a bunch of bull liars on there plownyc.gov website it shows that my street was plowed 1-3 hrs ago but it was never pkiwed bunch if bulkshitters.

It's so entertaining to read comments of someone who can't spell calling other people idiots... thank you for the morning chuckle

As usual, Christie and Cuomo are fleecing the taxpayers with huge PA toll increases and less and less services, it's a great "scam" on the people in the tri state region, these bridges should be 1/4 of the costs, and the MTA is in your pocket every turn, there is only one solution, taxpayers should flee the entire area ASAP!!!!

I am only going by how it was under Bloomberg who I was not a big fan of. Yet he did manage to keep our city much cleaner after a storm then our current Mayor has. I believe one or two storms he got blasted for because of not doing a great job but those were huge storms. A foot of snow the city could have handled better. The guy in Charge of Sanitation last night said don't expect to wake up tomorrow and see the streets cleared of snow. You will still see white on the main streets. Why is that when the cars are off the road in the middle of the night? I can understand why we had issues during the day but this morning all roads should be down to pavement. They had all night. As you can see I am referring to Management not the individuals doing the work. Bloomberg had the same crew and under him they did a much better Job.

To Flo , not sure if u know this but you are not suppose to put the snow in the street .. U can actually get a fine .. It's suppose to go on your property or on the side of the rd.... See problem solved ... The public causes their own problems... Stay off the street and we can clear them , don't put the snow in the street and u won't get snowed back in .... And always remember 3" and them we can plow .... .... Wow see never to old to learn something new!!!

  • flo - 10 years ago

My 2nd comment, I know the DOT works hard to get Main Street, Avenue, Boulevards, Highway clear fisrt. The sides are not priority. But what about when you do come. By that time people spent hours shovelling cars out. Then here comes the plow plowing everyone back in. Need to come up with better plan. Pliw one ways to the opposite side of cars parking.Dont say its not possible because it is. Years ago when I lived on a one wat everyone on blick was out shovelling, the pkow finally show up on block And what do you know... their ready to plow us in. We made them stop n turn plow opposite dide, And Guess What? THEY DID.Pretend I am one of your family members, and stop plowing everyone back in!!

  • flo - 10 years ago

Why do the plows plow cars back in after we spend hrs digging them out? The city can't come up with another way to get snow off the streets? ? Look at the Whole picture, something is very wrong with it. I'm in my 50's partly handicapped, have no one to shovel me out, but yet my tax dollars go to the DOT to plow me in. How about you come shovel me out since my tax money pd you to plow me in.? DID I HEAR ANYONE VOLUNTEERING? ??

  • Keith - 10 years ago

3in to plow with a garbage truck this city needs to invest in plows with salters not trash men raping the city pretending to clear snow !!

  • John - 10 years ago

The Staten Island Advance and all you idiots out there storm after storm and year after year we got to go through this. There needs to be more than 3 inches on the ground in order to plow. With all you idiots driving around how are they suppose to get there job done. They are ordered on stationary stand by till they get there orders to drop there plows and follow there routes. So get the facts before making lazy comments!!! Nothing better to do then bash these guys year after year. I hope there isn't another Sandy anytime soon Cause if I were these guys I wouldn't be running to any of your aide!!! Idiots

Fuck this website n newspaper. They suck

  • Kevin - 10 years ago

Hey Rita maybe your dumb ass should stay off the road in a blizzard and let the guys work.

Doesn't matter if the first flake fell at 8am. Unless there's 3 inches the plows can't do shit anyway. You people are unbelievable. We're in the middle of the goddamn storm and you're already crying.

Of course half the roads aren't plowed. More than half the roads aren't primary roads so you're absolutely right. You think we're sending plows down your side street when the highway is turning white? You people have no idea what it involves yo prove rely clear a storm.

You didn't hear us complaining while we worked around the clock for months helping staten islanders clean up after the hurricane. Cut the guys some slack, they're gonna be out there all night and all day so you ingrates can get get to work tomorrow and bitch on SI Live about it at your computer

  • Crystal - 10 years ago

How can sanitation do their job when there's maniacs driving all around going nowhere!! let me guess you got stuck going to a friends house lol TYPICAL STATEN ISLANDER COMPLAINER COMPLAINER. Sanitation will do a great job as they always do STOP IT ! Lets get to the bigger topic on if its so bad out why is everyone driving and diving like maniacs might I add ! NYC SANITATION GOT THIS

  • John - 10 years ago

THANK YOU LOU , this guy is a such a complainer...

  • John - 10 years ago

Just wondering how did u see trucks on Richmond ave at 11:30 when u said u were at work for 6 hours at 22 st I. Manhattan ! WOW YOU ARE AMAZING U GOT TO THE ISLAND THAT FAST GUESS THE ROADS ARENT THAT BAD!!!

  • Lou - 10 years ago

You people are morons. You have no idea what entails snow removal. Bunch of spoiled whiners. Storm isn't even in full swing yet. Stay home where you belong and let these guys do their jobs.

  • John - 10 years ago

REALLY ! 11:30 , there wasn't enough snow on the ground to plow! You need between 3&4 inches on the ground to have any effect... As far as your garbage that's not today's topic, but I guess I was right some of you people have nothing better to do then complain..... My big thing with this is the Advance has the nerve to come out with a poll already ... Freakn media! I guess that so called SUV you seen needs better tires MY WRANGLER HAS NOT ONE PROBLEM ! BTW LOOK AT THE TV THE ROADS ARE BAD ALL OVER EVEN IN NJ!.. You know many of the Sanitation workers are out after working 2 wks straight no days of no family life and then they have to go get the garbage that's piled up , just a quick question how much garbage do u think a truck holds ? Do u think it will hold a wks worth of work on one truck , umm how about no! So it takes time! What do u do for a living sit behind a desk and look at a computer out of the elements all day and complain about everyone else who doesn't make your day easy... Sorry man but you need to get a life .... NYC DEPT OF SANITATION I JUST WANT TO SAY GREAT JOB AND GET HOME SAFE TO YOUR FAMILIES !!!

  • Rita - 10 years ago

John, you clearly have a friend or relative so you feel u need to support, but you obviously weren't driving around at 11:30 when there was already plenty of snow on Richmond avenue and i drive by about 25 sanitation plows and salt trucks PARKED by the depot. Get moving lazy pieces of #@$@. i was sliding all over and so was a giant SUV in front of me. they suck and never plow my street, too. plus, they also picked up garbage at my mother's house for the first time in 2 weeks the other day. what the hell were they doing that they couldnt pick it up. disgraceful!!!!!

  • John - 10 years ago

Sorry people but you really make me laugh, you are voting on the storm already! Staten islanders have to much time on their hands, how can u rate the sanitation dept. at this point of the storm, it's happening as we all speak! I need to say until we all walk in their boots we don't know how difficult it is to keep up with the amounts that are falling! Everyone is so quick to jump on the ban wagon to complain!! They all have a route to follow so sorry if your poor little side street isn't done yet! They need to keep up with the main roads first. I PERSONALLY THINK THEY DO A GREAT JOB FOR ALL THE STREETS THEY NEED TO COVER!!!

  • Ray - 10 years ago

I work on 22nd street in manhattan. I've been at work for 6 hours. I have NOT seen one plow or salter yet. Horrible job!!!!!!
