We need all of the above. Traffic gridlock will not be solved with one magic bullet. We need a comprehensive plan that genuinely seeks to support alternatives including walking, cycling, public transport (land and sea), that cuts down on the number of cars on the island, that increases occupancy of the cars that are on the road, that analyses the injustice in the share of public space claimed by car owners over other citizens and that creatively plans for alternative public transport systems such as underground networks, tramways, light rail, double decker buses etc. This plan will need a huge shift in culture in Malta as the current gridlock is caused by the Maltese obsession with the private motor car that is often single occupant because that enables each driver to claim freedom of movement and a bubble of public space around them at the expense of people who do not use a car.
