If a mane character other than Twilight was the focus of Season 5, who would you want it to be?

Always nice to see people acknowledging the fact that Rainbow Dash has improved her attitude tremendously over the past few seasons. I personally feel that Scootaloo is the one who's humbling her the most. Having Scootaloo not be able to fly and Rainbow Dash being devastated by that fact would be incredible for her character to go through (showing that she cares more for Scootaloo's happiness than her own). As for Spike, true he needs more development, but they don't need to make him the focal point of an entire season to do it. Just one or two good episodes would be enough.

  • NightmareKnight - 10 years ago

I am always surprised at how popular Rainbow is. She was SO! obnoxious and irritating at the start of the show but I admit her attitude has improved tremendously since then. I would have voted for either of my two favorites of Fluttershy or Rarity but, with the emergence and evolution of Twilight's character, Spike seems even a further distant cog to his mistress. Lately, Spike has been reduced to little more than a lap dog for Twilight and I strongly urge that he evolves with Twilight or be feared of being left in the dust.

  • anon - 10 years ago

That's an interesting way of looking at things, Duano. With the exception of Fluttershy, though, I think any of the mane 6 could work as being the focal point of a season.

  • Duano - 10 years ago

Being loyal is actually the easiest in my opinion. The hardest for me is friendship (I replace that with magic in this case) and honesty. I don't like being honest, that made me lose a couple of friends and I have trust issues. I told them the truth because I wanted to prevent something bad happening to them. But being loyal I still try to help them despite we're not really friends anymore because they don't want to, they feel I don't deserve bad friends like them and I try giving them another chance because I do love them. So those two elements are hardest for me, especially honesty in this case as it lead to friendship issues. Since then I've kept everything to myself, not telling anyone anything...

  • anon - 10 years ago

Dash is popular for a good reason. She has the toughest Element to live up to (being loyal all the time is harder than it seems), and she manages to pull it off beautifully most of the time. Plus she's had some of the most heart-warming moments in the series with Scootaloo. Fluttershy only seems popular because she's cute. So you're half right, Duano.

  • Duano - 10 years ago

Rainbow Dash is overrated enough so nah, Flutershy too.

  • manponyguy - 10 years ago

    Proud of ya, Dashie!

  • Rainbow dash - 10 years ago

Awwww yeah! Taking the lead! I can't wait to tell my friends thanks you guys I wuv you for voting for me and with me is my friend Fluttershy: Congratz rainbow you deserve it you have amazing potential *hugs angel*.

  • thatisall - 10 years ago

Dimmet is 100% right. Spike is a sidekick, and there's no shame in that.

  • Red shirt - 10 years ago

Oh, look. The whiners have started posting. :P Whatever Spike's destined role is, the fact remains that the writers could be doing much greater things - MUCH greater things - with his character than they currently are. However, I NEVER want to see him become this "standalone badass" Dimmet speaks of; he doesn't have to be a badass to be awesome (he's already a freaking dragon) and I would rather see him developing chemistry with the rest of the cast than standing alone. Be he sidekick or main character, he has enough potential for several season-long story arcs that would only disappoint the little shits who care more about which characters they see than a smart, fun, compelling narrative.

  • Kristin - 10 years ago

I think only Spike and Applejack fits as a fcous main character, but since Spike is a dragon and this being My Little PONY I guess Applejack would be the right choice. The others just doesn't fit being the focus main character despite my favorites being Spike, Fluttershy and Rainbow Dash, but the show wouldn't feel right then. So yes, Applejack it is. I can't believe she's not higher on this poll, feels a lot more like a popularity poll because of that. The only thing that differs is Spike being second instead of last. I feel people don't think before they vote...

  • Big Sims - 10 years ago

Even as a Spike fan, I was stunned that he was 2nd on this list. I've read through all of the previous comments. As much as I love Spike, I have to agree that focusing an entire season on Spike is probably not the best idea. Mainly since the writers are having a hard time getting his episodes right. On top of that, I see Rainbow Dash having a good chunk of Season 5 devoted to her. After all, her personal story arc isn't finished yet. Something COULD work with Fluttershy, but can we cut down the episodes of her facing her fears of something?

I'll say this about Spike. His last two episodes of Season 4 I think took his character in the right direction. Having an inner conflict of possibly losing a friend and him not only saving the Crystal Empire for the 2nd time, acting humble about it. But aside from that, If you're going to give a lot of focus to Spike you'd probably have to go into a pretty dark direction. Spike is written so much better in fanfics because they're allowed to focus on Spike fearing what might happen when he becomes a giant dragon. He could be afraid to lose his friends and be all alone. It could also get to the point where Spike nearly sacrifices his life to save his friends. I personally think they should go back to him bring the supporting character like he was in Season 2. He struggles when he's the main focus but as the supporting character like he was in Lesson Zero and Equestria Girls, Spike is freaking amazing at that.

  • Dimmet - 10 years ago

Spike is not a main character. He should not BE a main character. The position of sidekick is a time-honored tradition. Practically holy.

Things were better as Batman and Robin before it was Batman and Nightwing. It's the same thing here. People saying Spike needs development are all harboring some unrealistic desire to see him become some standalone badass who 'makes up for' the fact he's been an accurately-portrayed sidekick all this time. He's even in the episode "Just for sidekicks", it's canon that he is a side-character!

He is a perfect sidekick, that does not mean he requires elevation, that means he requires praise for performing his role in an exemplary fashion. Too many chiefs, not enough braves.

  • oneradicaldude - 10 years ago

In response to those that say, "how did Spike get so many votes?', this poll doesn't necessarily reflect that they all are huge fans of the character. Maybe they actually believe he has greater potential than any of the other main characters on the show. I'm not a big fan of Rainbow Dash, but she's probably second in line for me, because of her possible future with the Wonderbolts.

  • oneradicaldude - 10 years ago

Even if you believe Spike's episodes aren't good, you can't deny that he has more potential for growth than any of the other characters. Second in line would be Rainbow Dash, even though I didn't care for most of her episodes. On the other side, probably Pinkie has the least potential for growth, even though I like her.

  • thatisall - 10 years ago

If Spike was the focus of an entire season, this show would lose probably 90% of its fanbase.

  • say wat - 10 years ago

How the hell does Spike get this many votes? He's probably one of the most hated characters on the show, and everywhere I look people want less of him or none of him at all. He can't even hold his own in one episode (some other pony always steals it from him), how the hell is he gonna hold an entire season? At least Dash is beating him (guess this fandom still loves her after all). Seriously though, screw Spike.

  • Torque Effect - 10 years ago

    Spike guys? SPIKE?!?!?!

    Oh FUCK no!!

Leave that little bastard as Twilight's Sidekick. That's where he belongs, that is where he shall stay. Bad enough when we get episodes that focus on him, i couldn't imagine him being the main focus during the entire season.

  • Jfluffy - 10 years ago

At much as I would like to have more focus on Spike, I doubt it would happen in a sensible way that will last. Focusing on the one male character that has been the butt of jokes through out the series probably wouldn't sit will with the suits anyways, after all the show's about the ponies, not the dragon. Honestly, I want to see more of the Spike I saw at near end of Twilight time, Cathy did an amazing job with the pissed off Spike voice.

  • Whatevs - 10 years ago

Although it occurs to me, while I stand by my statement that Rarity would be the best choice (particularly after Season 4 where she set the bar as a supporting character in addition to her already impressive collection of focus episodes), adult men would not want a show focusing on the girliest character.

  • abaikgirl - 10 years ago

Where's the Discord option on this poll?

  • Deli73 - 10 years ago

It seems like Pinkie is an amazing character when she's the focus of an episode, and an annoying pain in the arse the rest of the time. If they put more effort into making her a likeable character more regularly, that would be awesome.

  • marley - 10 years ago

Glad to see RD winning. Spike? Seriously? Spike episodes are notoriously awful. If they would write Spike the way they did in Lesson Zero or the opener in season one then I'd be okay with him but most of the time he's just an idiot. While I like Fluttershy, I'm surprised that she's a solid third while the remaining three are too close to call. Rarity is in last place which is surprising seeing how she did so well in season 4.

  • SuppliedRelic - 10 years ago

I am disappointed that Pinkie Pie is currently in last place.

  • Kick your can - 10 years ago

I love them all, but Spike and AJ has so many potential!

  • ShadowGentleman - 10 years ago

Pinkie Pie. She does incredible in her own episodes, but awful when other people have the spotlight. She's been abused for a good majority of season 4 due to that, so this could be the oppurtunity to put her back in good graces. Add that to the fact that we technically know the least about her(second's Fluttershy), and the fact that she's an emotionally diverse(and explosive!) character, she could carry half of a season at least. We have the opportunity to not only have visually appealing episodes, but also to have episodes that can do anything from making you laugh out loud(ala Pinkie Pride) to hitting the feels( ala Maud Pie) to just plain creeping you out(ala Party of one). It's that unpredictable edge that would make me want to see a season on her, she can literally do anything, anytime, anywhere, and no other member of the Mane Six can match that. Also Maud Pie. Hey guys! Pinkie Pie comes with Maud Pie!

  • Anonymous - 10 years ago

Trixie needs her own show. She has more to learn than Twilight at this point. I can't wait for the summer comics.

  • Swash - 10 years ago

Is...is this truly the same fanbase as yesterday? I'M SO PROUD OF YOU GUYS!

  • Aidinthel - 10 years ago

I had to put a bit of thought into this. My first impulse was to say "Fluttershy, of course!" because Fluttershy is best pony. But honestly, on further consideration Spike is the character that I think needs the most attention. To put it bluntly, he needs to grow up. I'd really like to see him become an equal of the mane6 instead of their sidekick.

  • Rocktavia - 10 years ago

As the characters currently are, I'd want either rainbow dash, rarity, or pinkie, but I think It would be nice to have applejack get some actual character development.

  • Chaucer345 - 10 years ago

    AJ.

Let's face it she's a natural leader and she could really use some deeper exploration, my best explanation for why is this: http://www.mlpanalysis.com/2014/05/04/chaucers-lab-analyzes-applejack-batman-superman/

  • NellzDaBlackKing - 10 years ago

The way I see it is this:
    * Spike is treated like shit by the fandom and writers and I think he should built up on more to redeem the crappy episodes he was featured in cause he's a good support character and the little guy needs to shown as such more often.
    * Applejack episodes aren't necessarily just an Applejack episode because she is ALWAYS in it with her family. I have no qualms with her family, it's just if I want to see an episode with just her and the closest episode that kind of fits that description is "The Last Roundup".
    * With Pinkie Pie, I want to see more episodes where she is a bit more serious like in "Party Of One" or "Pinkie Pride". Just something different where she always happy or breaking the fourth in some way.
    * We have episodes with Rarity being developed as a character and as much as I love Rarity episodes because she's the most complex character out the group, I think we can go a season without a Rarity episode or two.
    * Fluttershy episodes will be nice cause out the Mane 6, she was the only one who really befriended Discord, so some interaction between those two will be nice, or an episode that ties her to her family. In short, I think we need a better episode besides "It Ain't Easy Being Breezy".
    * And Rainbow Dash, I would love to see her progress in joining the Wonderbolts, but we have a lot of episodes based on Rainbow. And maybe some interaction between Scootaloo or her family will be nice as well.

  • Whatevs - 10 years ago

Oh and Rarity is the only pony to carry an entire episode. The others have not.

  • Whatevs - 10 years ago

    Nah. Rarity.
She's the deepest and most complex character. Her issues are more relevant to most girls and she's had almost as much development as Dash.
Dash may have more but it was because she was given an actual arc by the writers. Which is arbitrary for the most part.

  • Randompony - 10 years ago

    *arc. I mean arc. Facehoof.

  • Randompony - 10 years ago

I want to see Rainbow adjust to her new role in the Wonderbolts! So many stories can be derived from her new adventures along Equestria's fastest fliers. Will she climb the ranks? Will she go to different parts of Equestria? Will she become even faster than she is now? Will it become canon that she'll be able to pull off a double rainboom? Will she help Twilight establish the first "Rainbow Guard" for her new castle? There are so many possibilities I see with her. Twilight's arch was interesting in that her ascension gave her new responsibilities and challenges to overcome. It isn't until the end of four seasons that she finally realizes what she is meant to do and be. Pinkie, Applejack, Rarity, and Fluttershy all had established occupations and roles. There isn't too much that can be done since they've already found their niches within society. Rainbow, on the other hand, has "ascended" to Wonderbolt reserves status and, like Twilight, she will probably face challenges and new responsibilities until she finds her niche within the team. That's why I believe that Rainbow Dash could easily be the main focus of Season 5.

  • Kamy2425 - 10 years ago

I think it should be Fluttershy, only because she's the one that is best friends with Discord. I mean, the finale for season 4 for me felt like from the mane 6, Twilight and Fluttershy were the highlights for me. Plus, we could have more development with Discord. n_n

  • hifibrony - 10 years ago

It was a close call between Rara and Dashie, but I went with Rarity. Both are interesting characters and Dash has a lot more depth than she had in the first season and a half while Rarity is so multi-faceted that there would seem to be little end to the stories in which she could be featured.

Spike is a very solid supporting character but he doesn't need a season long focus. An ep or two about dragon history and his history - how did his egg come into Celestia's possession and why - would make for good watching, though,

  • nomisabeu - 10 years ago

I'd like to see a new character from "another world" who turns into a unicorn when he arrives in Equestria by accident. Also, his arrival causes some villains from other worlds to come to Equestria. He eventually learns about his magic powers and uses a combination of imagination and his new powers to defeat these villains with some help from the Mane 6, which makes him become friends with them. I think it would be interesting to watch. If it doesn't happen, I'd like to see some AJ or Fluttershy episodes, but I wouldn't mind seeing anypony else from the Mane 6 or the Royal Sisters in the spotlight.

  • Mally - 10 years ago

Would be fun to finally get to see Dash joining the wonderbolts and the challenges she would face! Also, she STILL hasn't had her own song yet which the rest of the mane 6 has gotten.

  • River - 10 years ago

I think Spike needs some episodes simply because he's not one of the mane 6, and if season 5 focused one one of the mane 6 other than Twi, it would just seem weird. Ideally there should be more Twilight Sparkle episodes in the next season. Season 4 seemed lacking in that regard. Fluttershy is a good character and the episodes with her are pretty good. I think that her or Rarity would be a good focus for season 5 just because there is a lot of depth to those characters. An episode where Pinkie goes evil or something would be cool, but that's about all I can think of for her. As for AJ, an episode about her that DOES NOT revolve around the Apple Family would be nice. A whole season of it might be a bit much though. RD episodes are actually all pretty good, but I feel like she gets a lot of episodes already.

  • Crazy - 10 years ago

    CMC of course!oh?they aren't in the poll?strange.
    Than AJ,she have big potential.

  • Ebonysdagger - 10 years ago

I'm honestly not sure if I would watch at all if Twilight isn't the focus of the show. She is really the only reason I watch it after all. Season 4, for all that it was amusing, was a bit of a slog for me due to the lack of Twilight centered episodes as it was.

  • Yay - 10 years ago

    AJ

  • MeandSamBFFL - 10 years ago

Oh god, all of those awful votes for Spike. He's the shittiest character on the whole show. I swear, if we get a whole season of focus on him, I just won't even bother watching it. He gets more episodes than the other mane characters lately as it is, and they turn out awful. I cannot stand characters that do nothing but fail and end as the butt of jokes often. And don't forget how mopey he gets.

Applejack is just as bad of an option. Her episodes lately have been better I suppose (minus Bats! Which was utter shit), but her character itself doesn't have much to it still other than LAWL APPLES AN' MUH FAMERLY AN' THA FARM. If they step outside of that, then maybe I'd care for her a bit more, but they haven't tried that much. Thus is why the Last Roundup is my favorite Applejack episode, because she actually went out and did something NOT apple or family or farm related (for the most part).

My vote is for Fluttershy, but only because she is my favorite Mane 6. I wouldn't mind if any of the other options got the focus next season, just not Spike or Applejack. But that's just me.

  • & - 10 years ago

    spike has no potential.

  • trixie - 10 years ago

    trixie is best mane 6
    trixie>all
    also
rainbow dash sucks and is overrated

  • An - 10 years ago

Applejack. She has potential, which can be used in an interesting way. She's a strong character, just as strong as Rainbow or Twilight. With a good story and writer, who understands her character, it'd be something really good. Also, I would love to see more episodes in which she acts like a leader.

After Applejack... Rarity. And maybe Rainbow, though in my opinion her role in the show is already very strong, so I'm not sure if she needs it. And Rarity's love for fashion and ambition usually make very good episodes.

  • Gokudomatic - 10 years ago

Everytime Dash has the spot it's at best an average episode. And with Spike, well, no thanks. So, the one with biggest potential is Fluttershy. And the one with least potential is Pinkie Pie, because she's too powerful (she'd be better as an antagonist). But one who would make a very interesting protagonist for a whole season is Trixie.

  • r - 10 years ago

Okay, I am curious -- lets say that they decided to do a Rarity based season... Nine of the 26 episodes will focus on Rarity reaching some epic conclusion at the end of the season... Just what journey would those nine episodes show? Where would it end?

  • Wat - 10 years ago

    RAAAAAAAAAAAAAINNNBOOOOOW DAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    *shakes fist at air*

Of course it's Rainbow. Though I was expecting Flutters....
Honestly, this is more like a test to see who your favorite pony is of the Mane 6 (Besides Twilight, if she is your favorite...)

So of course, I voted for best pony, Rarity. As almost always.

(Also, people who are saying it should focus on RD because "RAINBOW POWAH!" is just a stupid reason. Rainbows have always been a part of the show, and just because there is a rainbow power doesn't mean it should focus on Dashie. Besides, do you really want RD to be the mascot of the designs that almost everyone agrees are hideous? )

  • Feanor - 10 years ago

I usually dont comment on these at all but it made me very happy to see Spike up there, even if it was only second place, I didn't expect that! Glad there are other Spike fans out there or atleast those who see his potential and need for development!

  • Chad - 10 years ago

Fluttershy needs to embrace her batty side. Then AJ can become a seapony to complete the new mane six. Spike can grow wings or something.

  • Richard - 10 years ago

Actually it is more of a "Which pony is ready to reach their goals?" Rainbow Dash could very easily do so in this season, or at least what she thinks is her goals. Fluttershy could also work, having the equivalent of a Twi 3rd season. None of the others are really that close to a major lifechange.

This poll missed the three who might be a major focus in season 5... The CMC. I think they will get their cutie marks FINALLY.

  • Katdude - 10 years ago

To be quite honest, this question feels more like:
"Out of the Mane 6(Besides Twilight) and Spike, who is best pony?
But Season 5 needs to build Spike a little more, poor bastard is a punching bag for the writers.

  • Violette - 10 years ago

Applejack. She just fits this kind of role most, she also has potential. Second would be Spike. The others doesn't fit this role for some reason. Sorry Rarity and Fluttershy, you're still my favorites! Applejack or Spike just works better for this kind of role.

  • Don - 10 years ago

More Spike & Rarity XOXO , More back story on Dash, AJ & Scootachicken.

Add depth to the shows untapped history.

A little moon & Sun butt action in Ponyville.

From season 1-4 we saw growth & change, Who knows by the end of season 5 the ol Grey Oaks could be rebuilt. (Even ponies got to have insurance for just such emergencies)

  • Drageon - 10 years ago

I voted AJ, I'd like to learn more about her parents.
Same goes for RD, and I'd also like somemore spike episodes. And Royal Sister episodes. Perhaps another discord one, a scoots episode on her parents, something to do with Trixie... The list goes on and on. Primarily, I would like to understand AJ more.

  • SpartanNinjaDragon - 10 years ago

I voted for Rarity. I want to see her have more hilarious freak outs and fight giant crab monsters.

  • Capitalspace - 10 years ago

I vote RD because, well why not?

Also, I find it funny that we have a "RAINBOW Power" but its not centered around RAINBOW Dash?

idk, something something, why add rainbows to an already rainbow pony, Hasbro confuses me sometimes. :l

  • Dashie24 - 10 years ago

I chose Rainbow Dash cuz I can't get enough of my favorite character, but I'd also love to see Rarity. In fact, I believe a Rainbow Dash and Rarity episode is long overdue, I'd like to see them get more interaction. The closest they've had was Sonic Rainboom, but it wasn't really a test on their friendship. Maybe an episode that focuses on their common drive to be in the spotlight or something. They're more similar than people seem to think. :)

  • Ronan - 10 years ago

Fluttershy is leading? Man, that would be a boring season.

  • Swash - 10 years ago

The dude is associated with two different species, but can't never be fully immersed in one or the other. If that alone isn't more compelling than a bunch of happy pony friends, something is broken in the world. A struggle to become a knight in shining armor - and the irony and controversy he deals with as a result - would be something special as well.

  • Mango - 10 years ago

Spike seems to have potential that's never used- I mean, he's a species we practically know nothing about except that they take long naps, are greedy assholes, and breathe fire.
