Now at the young age of 56, I have been blessed to have traveled to over 5o countries, 45 states and 100's of cities in my life time. ( Thank you Mom & Dad! I have never found a City I would rather live in then McMinnville Or. The Down town, 3rd st takes on many different looks during the year. With each changing season brings on a new post card picture waiting to be shot.
McMinnville is much more then a main street. Beauty is said to be in the eye of the beholder. Main street McMinnville's beauty comes from our citizens as much as it does the canopy forming trees and a mix of bench's and statues to unique store fronts and restaurants.
It's Main street USA........Baby!! Be part of Drag the Gut 2014..... Aug 22 & 23. Take a drive down Main street USA and and fall back to a simpler time..

Too bad many of us in Placerville found out about this too late. I think a run-off would be appropriate as the results are so very close!!

Many of us in Placerville only found out about this contest today(myself included~but I did get a vote in) I think we should be given a "run off " vote between Mc Minnville, Or. & Placerville, since the vote totals were only half a percent difference. I'm sure if more people had found out about this sooner, we would definitely have had the winning number of votes, I feel sure !!!

I too didn't know about this contest until it had already closed. Placerville is a wonderful community, so rich in Gold Rush history, and so alive today. We work to preserve the past and enjoy and honor the present, in order to secure a bright future for our small, rural town.

We moved to McMinnville, Oregon from the mid west 6 years ago. We cannot say enough about this home town. Friendly, everyone stops for pedestrian traffic. Our downtown is alive and thriving.

  • James - 10 years ago

Wish us El Dorado County folk knew about this earlier than today.... Our community would have pulled together to make sure Placerville won. What a wonderful Main Street we have. RE-MATCH!

I feel so fortunate to live in Placerville. If there was a category for friendliest town, I'm sure Placerville would win - hands down. This is an active little town that loves it's downtown. The DownTown Association works hard to keep our Main Street active, current, fun and still maintaining that hometown feel.

Best Main Street Every! Wish I'd known about this contest before today.

Been thinking about moving out of our hometown McMinnville, Oregon to some new beginnings but it's hard to leave such an amazing downtown life. It has been kept up so well, like going back into time. And if you eat and shop there regularly you get the best sense of community!!

Placerville! Never heard about this until today! Would have been nice to know about this earlier. Placerville recently won Main Street Matters by Benjamin Moore. Let's go Placerville :) A wonderful Main Street and town.

Placerville, CA. Come visit. You'll love the history and the charm. There's no place like home!

Lots of us here in sunny California would love the opportunity to vote for our amazing Main Street in Placerville. However, it's only 1:00 pm PST and the poll has already been closed. The article states that it was to remain open until 11:59 pm ET (9:59 pm PST).... Anyway it can be re-opened?

At 10:00Orego/West Coast time I went in to vote and the poll was closed........we need an explanation for the next rounds to make this fair. We love our downtown. It looks beautiful and has so much going on but it is hard to describe the impact it has on our small town of McMinnnville....how it brings people together and gives us the sense of community that so many places have lost...for young and old. Add to the two events mentioned are other parades and celebrations and a wonderful live community theater in the center. The downtown is ALIVE....

I was the Manager of the McMinnville Downtown Association from 1994-2008 so I know all the work that has been going on since 1986 till the present. A lot of us have been in the trenches, so to speak, to make our town as beautiful and appealing as it is now. The local wine industry has made a huge impact for our downtown. But the biggest thank you goes to the National Main Street Program and our local leaders and property owners who believed in that program and followed it with passion.

I echo Andrew's comments above. Those of us just finding out this morning through The Oregonian that we were on this list but being able not vote because our two west coast towns were already closed because of EDT is really a tragedy. Thank goodness we have gone on to Round 2 but do we have to rouse everyone out of bed to vote?

Downtown McMinnville is like going back in time. Cute and interesting shops to fill every need are nestled in an old time setting. It is a relaxed and fun way to spend an afternoon. You can find delicious food or that new clothing item you are looking for all in the same block. I was disappointed I could not vote as this one had been closed. All of the other voting was still open. That didn't seem fair. This town definitely deserves recognition.

It is now 1430 hours (2:30 P.M) EDT. Given that the voting is to be available until 2359 hours EDT, it is unfortunate and certainly inequitable that the California - Texas poll is now closed. Both locales have their proponents and they should have been permitted to vote until the advertised closing deadline.

This street is as comfortable as your living room. Many fine restaurants have tables and chairs on the sidewalk; there are often street performers on the weekends; an empty "plaza" is used for free concerts in the summertime. Life is easy… and beautiful, in McMinnville, Oregon.
