Well, it doesn't seem to be going the way of the small town. I must say though, that considering the town is outnumbered by 59,000 people, Rockland has gotten a lot of votes. It's a wonderful place to live and visit, and if you love Lobster, then your stomach owes this community and the hard working fisherman all along the coast a big thanks. Living the dream.....

Historic Ellicott City Main Street is a fantastic place to both visit and live. There's a unique blend of history & museums, artists & studios, live entertainment, hiking trails, unusual boutiques and dining. It's a community I'm proud to call home. Please vote for us!

Ellicott City, known as Ellicott Mills until 1868, is an amazing town that has survived tragedy decade after decade, to flourish as one of the brightest spots in Maryland. Its spirit of perseverance is as strong as the locally quarried granite that comprises many of the town's buildings. It is home to the oldest surviving railroad station in America, where the first 13 miles of track in the country where laid. Filled with eclectic shops, artists, boutiques and restaurants, it has overcome fire, floods, and military occupation during the Civil War. Famous persons to walk its streets included H.L. Mencken, Babe Ruth, R.E. Lee, Washington Irving and even Davy Crockett!
You can start at one end of Main street at a modern microbrewery housed in an 20th century building, then walk down toward the Patapsco River past antique stores in 18th century buildings and finally arrive at the granite edifice that is the B&O Railroad museum where you can talk to Civil War reenactors and step back into the 19th century.

I moved onto main street when I was 20, lived there for four years. I am very fortunate to still work on Main Street. It is home. In just three traffic lights there are countless bar/restaurants that always have some sort or special or entertainment every night of the week (open mic nights, comedy night etc.), three salons, photographer studios, makeup studio, all ages yoga studio, hands on pottery, skate shop/record store, coffee shops, hookah bar and last but not least all the amazing shopping. A vintage/antique lovers heaven! The Spring Fest/Fall Fest and December's Midnight Madness are three huge, full street participation festivals that happen once a year. In addition, there is also a First Friday and a Third Thursday (Girls Night Out) celebration that happen every month! The street is always alive with music and art and expression for every age group. Main Street Ellicott City is an amazing place to live, relax, play music, eat, drink and explore.

Ellicott City's community is committed to preserving it's past while preparing for it's future. We have banded together to polish this Maryland gem and promote all that is has to offer - rich history for our town, state and Country (1st passenger rail station, greater Ellicott City is still home to the family of one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence), great art, amazing antiques, fantastic restaurants, and a myriad of specialty boutiques that all combine in this wonderful place!

Rockland Main Street has world class restaurants, art museums, galleries, music venues, festivals...along with a plethora of stores that run the gamut. It was settled (by Europeans mind you) in 1769...and it has a great mix of fun AND industry...being the home to many businesses with a global reach (a plus in my book). You don't want a living, breathing town to be all tourist-centric.

Ellicott City is a jewel. We have an active artist community, local family owned small businesses, and lots of history. It was founded in 1772 by the Ellicott brothers as a mill town on the Patapsco River. It is on the B&O Railroad and part of The National Road. We have several festivals a year, ghost tours, and weekly farmers markets right in town.

    Ellicott City...it's so pretty.

The picture does not do Ellicott City justice - it is much prettier! Main Street contains brew pubs, unique boutiques, restaurants, many of them family owned businesses. It winds along a branch of the Patapsco River as well.

Rockland's Main Street is home to not only some of the coolest artists, but also some amazing restaurants! We have the homestyle cooking of the Brown Bag, the Celtic nuance of Clan MacLaren, the ice cream parlor flair of Thorndike Creamery (try the pizza), and even the classiest burger joint I've ever seen: L&H Burgers. It also houses toy stores, several top-notch bookstores, antiquing, and... I've just written an advertisement, sorry. It just seems like such a naked blurb when you've actually *been* there.

One important thing left out of the description is Ellicott City was the first terminus of the first railroad in the United States. Its historic train station is now a museum and during the Bicentennial was declared a Heritage site.
