When I was a kid we used to summer on Cape Cod. There was a great farm stand on the way that sold the sweetest sweet corn ever. We always stopped there and bought dozens of ears for our first cookout. Great memories of family fun and summer grilling.

Your danger dogs are great on the grill! I serve them on homemade buns with a pepper, onion, tomato relish. YUM! Since I work I like to cook more then one meal on the grill. My Santa Maria Tri Tip & Santa Maria Beans are very good for summer grilling.

  • Debra Carmichael - 10 years ago

Any of the above. We love grilling out but its not just a summer thing for us, we do it year round. My husband is retired Army and even stationed in Alaska we cooked out in the winter.

  • Kimberly Finn - 10 years ago

We make our own rubs, marinades, and sauces for chicken and ribs so we always get a different flavor for the good old grilled corn-on-the-cob! Of course, it wouldn't be a family BBQ without a sticky sweet s'more finish!

  • Amanda L - 10 years ago

This entire list would make an amazing cookout!

  • Amy Medeiros - 10 years ago

Definitely burgers, sweet corn, potato salad and watermelon. Also strawberries and blueberries. I love that summer fruits make it so easy to eat healthy in the summertime (and to offset all that potato salad and burgers...) :) Thanks for the opportunity to win one of your books!

  • Teri Haire - 10 years ago

  • Cynthia E. Blain - 10 years ago

Our family likes just about everything on the list above and we rotate what we grill but we don't do a lot of fish on the grill unfortunately as some of us have allergies. But we do love lobster steamed in a pot ON the grill along with plenty of steamer clams from Maine or Cape Cod and many times we do a Clam Boil with the potatoes, onions, Portuguese sausage or Kielbasa, along with the clams. Nothing like a real New England Clam Boil. We make homemade clam chowder and clam fritters too to go along with almost every cookout/BBQ. This year my daughter has taken over for me with the cooking due to my health and healing problems from a series infection and I surely do miss doing all this.

    Next year, God willing.

Thank you for the great information and interesting postings each day.

  • Ronna Lord - 10 years ago

Definitely burgers and ribs for the carnivores and any kind of veggies --lots of them--taste great on the grill. But the potato salad is a definite must. It's my mom'r recipe from years ago and everyone loves it and the memory of mom/Grammy/great Grammy ! Now I also must add here that you guys have some terrific recipes and we love the ones where you add coffee as an ingredient. Never thought of coffee as anything but a drink before, but I've learned more from your books than I could have imagined. Hope this series continues for ever and ever!!

  • AnnMarie Green - 10 years ago

4th of July was like a big family reunion when I was growing up. It was the best picnic ever with every dish listed above so it was hard to pick just 4. Forget the beer though. Make mine a gin and tonic and for dessert a cup of coffee with a plate full of cakes and cookies!

  • Teresa - 10 years ago

We just attended one where the host prepared the best ribs I've ever had--so many choices. I'm game for about anything when it comes to a cookout!

  • Carol Summers-Kolber - 10 years ago

My favorite cookout was the summer before my husband passed away. All the family was there and some of my adult kid's in-laws too. We cracked open a bottle of wine that my granddaughter had corked in her summer apprenticeship to a vineyard and toasted each other. My son-in-law did the grilling and we all contributed the side dishes. We ate outside under the huge maple tree in the backyard while various family pets chased each other and the younger kids around the yard. We all knew my husband did not have much time left because of his illness and it remains one of the best days of summer past.
