My two cents worth: My 21yo son who is always cold asked for an earflap hat. Because he rides his bike around campus and it's very cold here in winter, I added a berber fleece lining. DS says "it's too hot" (!) So next time I would add fleece to ONLY the ear flaps. Especially if the yarn is bulky, as bulky yarn lets in too much wind. :)

Call me crazy, but why not knit them both?! Winter is long & cold so she will probably have plenty of opportunity to wear them both many times. :-)
Also, I really want to tell you how much I love your website and blog. I don't know exactly how I found it but I love it's, thanks!

Personally, I go for the adorable pom-pom but since I'm not going to wear it, perhaps you should get your daughter to make the final choice.

I saw the ear flap sample when I was in the store over the weekend and it was adorable!

I don't like either of them, to be frank, but the first is a bit nicer than the second.

They are both cute but The ear flaps is the one I like the best. If it is not a surprise ask her she will let you know which one she likes the best.

I think that the ear flap one is "cool" and also great for our cold winter!

Oh I love them both. But for your daughter I think I like the Earflap one. Will keep her ears nice and toasty. Now I am toying with the idea of making the Vermonter for myself!

I can see your dilemma! The earflap will keep her nice and warm though, and the bumpiness of the pattern reminds me of a little lamb. ;)
