Did officials get the Dez Bryant call right?

Rad... Dez had controll (by rule) took 2 steps ( touched by Pac defender after first ) streched for the goaline ( a football move) So by rule 2 feet down with controll making a football move ... no longer a reciever now a ball carrier. Ground cannot cause a fumble down by contact at the one yard line. If ruled a fumble Dez recovers ... TOUCHDOWN.
PACK FAN but more a real football fan!!!

  • Ooooo - 9 years ago

Lol that's why the Packers lost Anyway!

sooooooooo the Cowboys beat the Lions off a bs call, but loose the following week of a bs call named the calving jhonson rule (a LIONS player) OOOOOOOO the irony....my question to all cowboy fans, I thought yall said one play doesnt determine the outcome of the game.

Les Ismore....eloquently described and written. Nothing more is needed to be said. (except, I'm glad Dallas lost..lol)

I wish it was a catch, it was an awesome attempt...but it was not. This was a leaping aerial catch that ended with the receiver going to the ground....falling down. Of course your feet are going to hit the ground, but he was in the process of falling, and thus needs to maintain possession throughout the fall...if you are falling you are not yet making a football move. And 5 yards is easily covered in the process of falling down by an athlete moving that fast.

On 4th and 2 his ONLY priority should have been to simply get the first down...catch the ball....not score, it wasn't necessary. 1st and goal at the one yard line is fine....tuck the ball away…he started to do it, you can see that he brings it to his shoulder pads, so he could have continued, but he chose not to. Why? Is it that he wanted to be the hero…he had to score?....because the smart play in that situation is to not force a play that isn't there and doesn't need to be made if it was. The TEAM WAY is the SMART WAY.

He had little to no chance of scoring but had a huge chance to simply fall down in possession of the ball….and that is what was needed…nothing more. And the chances were huge that if he tried to maneuver as he did to score he would most likely not maintain possession. The risk far out ways the reward…it just isn't smart football…winning football.

It's about choices…sometimes less is more.

It was a terrible call. I'm through with the NFL. How do any of you guys stand watching the game you love be controlled by crooked officials. When did great plays become unfair plays? When these officiating men with their self iinterest were given the power to make calls according to their own agenda. That's when. How much more do you need to see or take before you have enough.

That catch had spirit! I felt like a mom watching her son, so proud of how he did shine! You win Dez Bryant, your catch was of big heart! Lucky me to have seen the best catch of the game!

  • J McCullough - 9 years ago

Looked like a great catch to this Eagles fan. But the replay showed he did not come up with continued control after the ball touched the ground. Therein is the nasty rule that requires the call of incomplete. Perhaps that rule needs to be revisited by NFL. The decision was rendered correctly.

  • Mike - 9 years ago

Being an Eagles fan I despise the Cowboys. When they lose it's as fun to watch as a Birds victory. That being said, that was a remarkable catch, dude took three steps, had complete control, and THEN trying to win the game, reached for the goal line. If anything, it should have been a complete catch and a fumble (which he recovered)..ball at the one. Still, even with a TD it's 28-26, with plenty of time for a game winning field goal by the Pack. So if you're saying it cost them the game, that simply isn't true. Maybe...but maybe doesn't count as a victory.

FOR ALL THE FOLKS QUOTING THE RULE BOOK!! WE KNOW THAT CAMERAS DON'T LIE....HOW IN THE HELL-MENT...CAN YOU CATCH A BALL AT THE FIVE YARD LINE...AND END UP IN THE END ZONE WITHOUT TAKING STEPS OF SOME SORT...THAT IS SURELY CONSIDERED A FOOTBALL MOVE! THE REF JUST BLEW THAT CALL AND IF THE FOLKS IN NEW YORK DIDN'T CHIME IN TO KEEP THE CALL ON THE FIELD...THEY SHOULD NOT BE SITTING IN THE RECALL BOOTH! THE FIRST OFFICIAL HAD IT RIGHT....BALL DOWN AT THE GOAL LINE....FIRST AND GOAL FROM THERE.......THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE LIONS CALL AND THIS ONE IS SIMPLY THIS....THE COWBOYS DEFENDER WAS INTERFERED WITH AND THE PULL ON HIS FACE-MASK COULD HAVE CAUSE HIS MOMENTUM TO CARRY HIM INTO THE RECEIVER...EVEN WITH THAT SAID...IT'S STILL 50/50 WOULD THE RECEIVER HAD CAUGHT THE BALL...YES THE WAY THE DEFENDER RAN INTO THE RECEIVER WOULD WITHOUT ANY OTHER CIRCUMSTANCES BEEN PASS INTERFERENCE...HECK! I THOUGHT IT WAS PASS INTERFERENCE AT FIRST UNTIL I WATCH IT OVER IN SLOW MOTION....(NOTE) SO ON THAT CALL...THE REF SHOULD HAVE CALLED TWO PENALTIES...OFFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE AND DEFENSIVE PASS INTERFERENCE....RESULT= REPLAY THE DOWN...... ..REMEMBER THE CAMERAS DON' LIE....THEY DON'T HAVE A FAVORITE TEAM!! ...

  • Mike, Victorville CA - 9 years ago

Of course he caught it. But in sports, just as has happened in real life, (in the news media, in our schools, in our homes), people "in charge" (most self-appointed) are starting to dictate to the rest of us what our "reality" is - what passes for "truth".

    He caught the ball.

    That's reality.

    Period.

  • Ace - 9 years ago

When is reaching for the goal line not a football move! He clearly had control and made a simple football move to try for the touchdown. Calls like these are ruining football for me.

  • MikeK - 9 years ago

This call has been made all season by the officials and it hasn't changed. There is no question he caught the ball and had control, but there is also no question he was going to the ground, if he could have caught the ball and landed with balance and control it would have been a touchdown, but he didn't he could not maintain his balance and falling down he lunged for the goal line and the ball in his hand hit the ground. It doesn't matter how many steps he took or that his knee hit the ground, he could not control his body going to the ground and the ball was jarred loose by the ground. A football move means you are in control of your body making a natural normal move with your body under control, if you hit the ground under those circumstances and you have been touched by a defender then the ground can't cause a fumble. No controversy, the rule is very clear and it has been called that way for more than 4 years. Move on

  • tina - 9 years ago

How is three steps with the ball not a football move he had control if anything incomplete pass since the ground can't cause a fumble very disappointed in the officials

  • Jay - 9 years ago

I'm not a fan of either team, but as a soon to be former fan of the league, that was a catch! Obviously BOB follows GB because his ability to call the Cowboys crybabies is totally inaccurate. Following such an emotional loss, no owner, coach or QB could've been more gracious. The NFL is in trouble! Fans are tired of inconsistencies among penalties, player punishments and flat out handpicked winners! Worst game ever? NO/Minn which led to Bountygate. Last year marked a record drop in HS participation in the sport. Concussions, knee injuries aren't worth it. Throw in thugs, marijuana, steroids (C'mon! even most DB's resemble comic book heros) and Roger Goodell, who once had the world in the palm of his hand, f'd it all up! People! Every league has had their chance! There was nothing bigger than MLB in this country from the turn of the century till the mid eighties. Nothing bigger than the NBA with Magic, Bird and Jordan, Nothing bigger than NASCAR about the time Earnhardt died...but what was the common denominator? They all got f'd up by steroids and stupid rules along with a WWE mentality. Seriously? Fans are not that stupid. So too, this will happen with the NFL. It's already happening before our very eyes. How can players shake hands following games, after kicking the dog snot out of one another and saying mean things about their mamas for 60 mins? It's called $$$$!! And those being duped are the fans buying overpriced tickets, jerseys and concessions. Ha ha ha ha!! You know I'm right! So, to you Roger Goodell, nice job! Just like Obama, you had a chance and pissed it down your leg! So Bob! Enjoy your handpicked victory and hide behind the f'd up rulebook when it suits your team! I'm jumping off this sinking ship. See you, suckers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Bob - 9 years ago

You idiots should read the rule book before you go bashing the of fixating crew. If you "read" the rule, it's obvious this is not a catch and it shouldn't be. Instead of blaming the replay officials you should be blaming dez Bryant. In a critical fourth down situation he needs to secure the ball. This should be his first priority, not scoring. This is what happens when you have hot dog players that don't have their priorities straight. While he made a great play, he didn't finish it. Now the sorry @ss cowgirls can pack up and go home and bitch about something other than romo and Jason garret until they are eliminated next year, then find something else to bitch about. Loser @ss fans and a POS owner equal team that can't win. Hahahahaha.

  • Not blind - 9 years ago

The whole thing is bogus. One hand and control landing on the ground and knees hitting the ground ... Smh and no asshole shite talkers I'm not a cowboys fan! Just saying that was bs and a catch. Dez got F *#^!d and had nothing to do with Detroit karma morons!

  • luke strait - 9 years ago

Wrong call but can not change anything now so let the TRUE Cowboy fans just be thankful for the season we had I am a cowboy fan unconditionally and must still say I was surprised to see them do as good as they did now we know what we have for super bowl 50 I want to get it started already enough said

  • James a hicks - 9 years ago

It is a shame he made a good catcch after ganning controll of ball and reached and went for touchdown and fumbled ball his elbow and knee was down at 1/2 yard line were it should have been.Instant replay is good but when the up stairs can chalenge every call they control the game not referes on field.I have been a cowboy fan sence 10 years old and now will be 50 in march.the up stairs booth overturning calls is begging to sound like politics and more money they can make by changeing the winning team who they think make more money in superbowl for nfl.the commishner RODGER has lost most fans support.Fans dont come to games every week to see nfl rulle the games. We all grew up seeing our football heros and dreamed soday of makeing it in nfl please dont kill the fun and challenge for other kids and thier dreams by changeing to many rules and make it complicated where even nfl players cant figure out them.

Not sure if he made a football move or his momentum was taking him in toward the end zone off and simply off balance falling to the ground. I would think he would concentrating on catching the ball more than scoring.

Hee hee hee hee hee. Paybacks are hell, 'boys.

  • Jerry - 9 years ago

I cannot believe anyone who watches this in real time then in slow motion, sees when he actually gets control and how the ball pops out, then watches in real time again can think this is a catch. He gained possession while he was going to the ground and as soon as his arm his the ground the ball came out. Great attempt, very close, clearly had it but went down and couldn't hold on. If he would've tucked it rather than making a six inch reach to try to get the score he probably could've maintained possession. The Calvin catch was way more debateable. Agree that Cobb probably didn't secure it but there was nothing in the replay saying he didn't keep the ball 1/4 inch off the ground therefore it couldn't be overturned.

  • Ken kirby - 9 years ago

And the other bad calls, the trap before halftime, what an easy obvious bad call! Tells you right there that there is a problem with the replay official. Two hits on Romo at the knees after the pass was releases, especially Mathews on Romo's TD throw, that was an outright dirty play, way after the ball was released! Didn't realize he was a dirty player.

  • JOHN - 9 years ago

That Cowboy/Packer call was made by a crook protecting his bet. Too many of these calls have killed my interest in pro sports. Briant catches the ball, maintains control thru three steps, lands on his shoulder (Knees are already down) and still maintains control--- that's a catch !!! He did not loose control until he rolled over at the gold line. That call over ruled the correct call from the field ---Something SMELLS! I thought that replays were used only to correct obvious errors on the field and there had to be indisputable evidence to reverse a field call. My last review indicates that 70% of fans think the field call was correct
Last NFL game for me until they clean up their act. Haven't watched NBA for six years or pro baseball for 10. When the results of games are decided by Refs instead of players, I lose interest.

  • Ken kirby - 9 years ago

Just saw the Calvin Johnson play, he didn't control it through the ground. Went up to make the catch then came straight down. Dez, had the ball and lunged for the goal line. Completion then the ground can't cause a fumble!

  • sarah - 9 years ago

The Calvin Johnson rule. The letter of the game. He did not have complete possession. Great call refs. Maybe next year cowboys.

  • Tim - 9 years ago

There was several bad calls in the games from GreenBay trapping the ball to the 4-1 pass to Williams no call for defensive pass interference at the goal line and then Dez Bryant's incomplete pass that is impossible to catch without the ball moving when it hits the ground. This call is the worse call that I have ever seen - Dallas was cheated out of a sure win.

  • cowboys best ever in the nfl - 9 years ago

completing the process is only in effect when the receiver catches the ball and goes out of bounds. In this case dez had possesion before fumbingnand did not went out of bounds. Wrong call that cost us the season

  • Tim Monaghan - 9 years ago

He already had possession by the time the ball hit the turf. He caught it and made a move towards the goal line. My cowboys got robbed and hopefully the Seahawks crush the packers next week. Hopefully dallas will be back in the playoffs next year. I can't wait to play the packers next season and crush them.

  • glenn wedeen - 9 years ago

If we had high def, nanosecond stop action- every great catch of our youth would be overturned. The ball isnt caught with velcro suction. It's supposed to move. The guy maintained control. It's not a friggin video game. But I hate the boys, Im a Jets fan with little to live for

if you vote with your brain instead of your emotions and understands the rules it is a no catch. Kudos to McCarthy for having the knowledge and balls to challenge. Good call refs...this time anyway.

  • Paul - 9 years ago

as a Seahawks fan I would rather face Tony Homo and the cowgirls, but that was no catch sorry Dallas fans. The refs got this one right.

  • Rob Bierman - 9 years ago

The NFL should stop trying to be a Government. The Vikes were robbed against the Saints and the Cowboys same against Green Bay. It is boring to watch the NFL script a Broncos Super Bowl win. I don't even need to watch now.........

  • Rad - 9 years ago

Hey fellas by the time Dez had control he did not make a move except to fall to the ground which caused a fumble. Hate to rain on your misery but the ground can cause an incomplete pass. In the case of a run it can not cause a fumble. The rule is clear. Too bad for Dallas but their season should have ended the week before in Detroit.

  • bdbd - 9 years ago

Since it was called a catch on the field I dont understand how you can overturn that

  • Warf - 9 years ago

How to you take two steps and lunge if you "have not come down?" Come on NFL Big Gov.

  • Pete - 9 years ago

It was an unfortunate call, but in fact was a no catch. The ground can cause an incomplete pass whereas a fumble it can not. He barely had control with one hand. Good call unlike last weeks clear pass interference non call the refs blew in favor of Dallas.

  • Bob - 9 years ago

follow the rule book boys. That was no catch. Plus cowgals still had 4 minutes. Crybabies.

  • James - 9 years ago

That was a catch! And an amazing one at that, should be Cowboys vs Seattle

  • Bat Guano - 9 years ago

Leaping catch with BOTH hands securing the ball. Three deliberate strides toward the opponent goal line.
Only Green Bay fans can say with a sorta straight face "those aren't football moves"...oh, and some clown parsing out any language possible to reverse the most compelling and athletic play of the game.
Idiocy that makes a mockery of two very competitive teams. Terrific game spoiled by a travesty.

  • Sacramento 916 - 9 years ago

That call was so bad, I'm still in shock!!! Defiantly worse I ever seen.
