    Beth Moore is definitely OK!

    Dear Nic

    It’s worth one last try.

Numbers are a reality check and separate fact from wishful thinking, you could learn much by measuring. It tells you how good something is. The opinions and tastes of millions and millions of people cannot be wrong. (yet you think differently). You are proud that CBC listens to the tastes of a few hundred or a few thousand people (at best) in Canada over everyone else. This you think is right, because YOU like it !

Every artist on the planet dreams of that one song that will make them a star. For example, Billy Paul sang (one of my favorites) , “Me and Mrs Jones”, it was a one hit wonder for him and he performed it masterfully. Other stars like Celine Dion sang “the Titanic theme” and that one song made the world notice her, and was a launching pad to stardom.

The problem with CBC is not with their artists, it that the songs themselves are bad, not winners, not one of them.

I wish every one of those 20 artists best of luck in finding those songs. Then my opinion will change.

However, CBC is not as noble as you think.

Where were they to help Shania Twain when she needed it. Rush, Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Ann Murray, BTO, Corey Hart, April Wine, Trooper, Dianna Krall all had to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. Local radio stations did much more than CBC Radio 2. (I am not aware that they did anything)

I wish you well, and contrary to what you may think I do respect everyone's taste in music. I just don’t think Canadians should have to pay for it. The benefit to these artists is very small, as CBC radio 2 has a very small listener-ship, EXACTLY BECAUSE OF THIS MUSIC ! If it would be as good as you claim everyone would be listening. Case closed, it's not even a question of my opinion.

I think I made people talk.

    It was fun !

    Bye.

Oh Mario you gotta love it when people start crunching numbers. Sounds like your a big stats guy. Also sounds like CBC could have cared less about what you had to say. Its unfortunate they aren't playing your cookie cutter music and they are giving an outlet to have some lesser known music recognized. That's really a shame. I applaud CBC for there efforts and not listening to the likes of you and not being another top 40 list. If your not happy with it there are many other stations you can complain to or may appeal to you.

    Dear Nic

You are the second person on this site who thinks I should not express my opinion nor present any facts, because you are not in agreement with them. You think my comments are only thoughtless opinions. Fact is, you are not reading what I wrote.

    Let me explain further.

CBC radio 2 holds 2.5 % of the market share of radio, that is not 2.5% of Canadians. It is the lowest of the stations that are rated. That percentage is the people who tune in and we cannot assume they like any song or every song. For that we have to go to the voting.

It is important to know how many people voted for the percentages to make sense. That information is withheld by CBC for obvious reasons. It would really show how bad the music really is.

90% of all the votes are 1 or 2 %. So why is CBC continuing to play this unpopular music. It is unpopular even by their own low standards, and you criticize me?

Your comments just don’t make any sense, you should really think before writing.

You mention Ron Hawks, do you realize the vote for him is 14%. This is not "MY" opinion, it is a CBC statistic.

This just proves my point. There is NO support for this man from the faithful CBC listener’s you are defending. 14% is NOT a good number.

Without doing any elaborate math it is clear that support for Ron Hawks must be less than 14% of the 2.5% = about zero.

Do you realize you make no point, whatsoever !

  • Nic - 9 years ago

Mario last time I checked an opinion is a very personal outlook and owned by one. So you go one having your opinion and your audiophile views as that is what they are...yours. Please do not speak for anyone else. One of these artists...namely Ron Hawkins comes from Lowest of the Low a fantastic band and very very well liked by many.

    About Jim's comments

When I criticized the CBC, I gave very specific reasons. You could learn from my example and explain to Canada why YOU think they have great music. Then perhaps I could respect your opinion. Instead you chose to criticize me. Notwithstanding, I am aware a very tiny minority of people like CBC music. I respect every ones right to like anything, good or bad.

Fact is, CBC plays very low quality music for the specific reasons I outlined. The reasons are irrefutable. I contacted the CBC program directors about my opinion and their response was they are trying to give a chance to the underdogs/ or new comers. Unfortunately, these artists will not “jump to another stage” (as you put it) in anyone’s lifetime. They are just not of that caliber.

Also, your comments demonstrate you don’t know much about music. The piano is one of the few instruments that lends itself to everything, especially popular music. It has the ability and range to not only play the melody, but the bass line as well. It leaves the mouth free to sing, unlike say a trumpet. For this reason, much (or most) music is composed with the aid of the piano, it’s indispensable. (Elton John comes to mind)

Your suggestion that Beyonce or KW fall into “my category” of good music is YOUR fabrication.

That is not good music and will be quickly forgotten, as will CBC music. When I refer to “popular classics”, I am not referring to classical music, but popular music that is so good that it will be played again in 10, 20, 30 40 or even 50 years from now and be copied by other artists.

An example might be “Yesterday” by Paul McCartney. It’s timeless. Fantastic artist, fantastic song.

CBC says they play the TOP 20, but I say TOP 20 of what ? This is not “top 20” by any standard in the world.

Mr Jim, you have done a very poor job of defending your point of view and have not given one reason, explaining your love of this music nor have you refuted anything I have said. I stand behind what I wrote, and my facts, ARE FACTS.

    Don’t write about me anymore.

Express yourself to Canada using reason. I have !

  • johanne - 9 years ago

I totally agree with Jim... I love CBC music and all the music they play.

  • Ruth T - 9 years ago

    Go Beth!

  • Jim - 9 years ago

Wow, I just read Mario's comment and I am so sorry I took time to read it all.. Playing a percussion instrument like the piano does not lend itself to knowledge of all music and most melodies of modern music does not lend itself to be played on a piano, maybe you should stick to the classics.
The votes are CBC fan based and thankfully not subject to outside editing, although I am sure your comments will be appreciated by Beyoncé and KW.
I am a fan of CBC radio and its content and depth and the new artists that are promoted have the ability to jump to another stage.
To the CBC, I would like to see CBC lower the limit the amount of characters allowable on the comments though.

As for the artists: Go Beth Go!! Can't wait to hear your next hit on the radio!

Saturday Night by Yukon Blonde is one of the best songs this year!

    Yay Beth!!!

I am a Pianist, Audiophile, Audio Technician, and been into music for 40yrs. What CBC Radio 2 plays is downright horrible. Lousy songs with no memorable melodies sung by unknowns, is a bad formula. I would never play these tunes on my piano because they are not even pleasant. Any record store would have very low sales (if any) of this music and that says it all !

What they call the TOP 20 must be the bottom 500 in the real world of hits. This is NOT the top 20 of anyone’s list. The quantity of people voting is never revealed and it should be, because it may be only a handful of people voting, and therefore would not represent the opinion of a nation.

Nobody is listening to this bad music when great music is available on the internet. Notice the option is not given to vote against ALL the programming. I suggest it is only the family and friends of these artists who are giving favorable comments, how else could anyone think this is any good, in your wildest dreams? What is the matter with you people? You must have low, rock bottom, nonexistent standards if you think this is good, or you haven't been exposed to great music to know the difference !

Canada has some really great musicians, but they play the only unknowns. (They are unknowns because nobody wants them !)

This music appeals to no generation of the past, present or future, it's just plain lousy. What they call "alternative music" means what exactly? Is it Alternative to good taste. I grew up when AM radio was exciting to listen to, every song was a hit. So it is hard for me to understand such a low standard.

This is not a question of taste (or the mere opinion of one).

There is such a thing as bad music. They are playing it.

Music is bad when the tune cannot be recognized or remembered. If you cannot whistle or hum it. When the lyrics are sung in a monotone voice and the songs are about nothing. Not love songs. Their songs have very poor rhythm or none. Yet it’s the most important part.

This is why I say the music is lousy. Real lousy!

Nowadays music is real bad right across the FM band. We are going through the "Dark Ages" of music in the 2000's. But CBC takes the cake, as the worst on the FM band, bar none! No major composition or standout and no major artist is around, whose work will stand out as a classic of the decade. Truly the Dark Ages of music.

Mr Program Director, take a deep breath, and fire yourself. Canada will Cheer !

People at CBC have demonstrated they have no musical taste and cannot recognize talent or even the lack of it.

There is so much beautiful music out there from years ago, to be wasting everyone’s time on this lousy unsellable, unwanted, unpleasant monotone, talent-less trash.

I pay taxes and not for this noise they call music.

The very poor radio ratings of 2.5% says it all, and proves I am right. Canadians deserve the best. Not this !

It’s hard for the public to understand what they are trying to accomplish by "force feeding us music" we do not want to hear. They deserve all the budget cuts they got. They are not the treasure they think they are.

This is really bad music !
