Wow what's with all the bitterness?

CBC Radio 2 has introduced me to lots of great music that I love. And that alone is proof that CBC helps Canadian talent get heard. Their Top 20 can sometimes come across biased but they do pick songs that are hot out there, making the news. You don't like it, easy solution. OFF button. You don't have to treat this like politics. It is just music. Like food, you like it or you don't. And you don't eat it if you don't like it.

I'm voting for Terra Lightfoot. Got to be seen in concert! So good!

Also I'm suggesting Matt Epp back on here with his new song Ready In Time. Now THAT is a hot tune!

Keep it up Beth! Look at all the great artists you're up against! The fact that you're on the radio with these guys and gals is amazing.

  • Peter Scott - 9 years ago

Yukon Blonde are an amazing, talented band and deserve all the accolades they are receiving. Canadian artists need much more international exposure, they have earned it.

  • Carly - 9 years ago

Wow some people are truly unbelievable. This is supposed to be positive and supportive. If you don't like it find something else to do rather than trying to drag people down. Beth less....seriously? If you want less, don't listen to it. If you think Beth will give up you clearly don't know anything about her. Beth you are amazing and I'm so proud of you!

    @Mario

Since you don't like the tunes on Radio 2 have you ever considered that maybe non-commercial triple-a radio isn't your bag then? If they aren't playing artists you like there are plenty of other radio stations out there that may be to your liking.

Rob Szabo is hugely talented. "Okay" should be a reminder that he needs to head back into the studio and get another solo album on the airwaves!

  • Aurora - 9 years ago

There is no need for negativity! and to be rude! everyone on this top 20 deserves to be here if they didn't, they wouldn't! if you don't like the music don't vote for them-

    on another note:

    GO BETH MOORE!! your amazing!

I will answer Roland and Willie

Instead, why don’t you point out which of my facts are incorrect? So far no one has been able to do that. It’s unfortunate the truth hurts. These forums are for opinions. Always be polite !

Anyone can like any kind of music, even the nursery rhyme “Frere Jacques”, but that does not mean it’s good music. We have to differentiate between one’s personal taste and the standards of recognized international talent. I understand someone may like a song or two from the fictitious, so called “Top 20”, but overall the songs are very poor. The voting results confirm this.

The reason CBC is able to do it, is they have no sponsors, and therefore no accountability.

If the music is as loved as you say, this station would be very popular, BUT IT’S NOT !

SO YOUR ARGUMENTS FOR THIS STATION ARE SELF DEFEATING.

I feel privileged to have grown up at the tail end of the 1960’s, and music was great all the way up to the 1990’s when it began to change. Everyone took that fantastic music for granted. Every channel played great music, because that’s all there was.

There were many big name “MUSIC LEGENDS” . To mention just a few…..

ROY ORBISON, PAUL MCCARTNEY, JOHNNY CASH, BILLY PAUL, ELTON JOHN, THE BEATLES, CCR,TOM JONES, THE CARPENTERS, THE BEE GEES, ARETHA FRANKLIN, RAY CHARLES, THE SUPREMES, SIMON AND GARFUNKEL, MAMA’S AND THE PAPA’S, ELVIS, ANN MURRAY, ETC…..

Imagine all this talent, all at once, and TONNES MORE on all the stations. LEGENDS OF THE CENTURY they were, and many WERE INDUCTED INTO THE “MUSIC HALL OF FAME”. You can find their compositions in the collections of the “World’s most Beautiful Music” and even orchestral versions. Some sold up to 100 million copies!

So coming down from decades of superb great music to the level of the of CBC Radio 2 is, a terrific disappointment. They are really “SMALL POTATOES” in my book!

ROY ORBISON performs "Oh, Pretty Woman" as the finale of the Black & White Night Concert in 1987. Backed by Bruce Springsteen, Elvis Costello, James Burton, Glen D. Hardin, Tom Waits, kd lang, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, JD Souther, T Bone Burnett, Steven Soles, and Jennifer Warnes.

Watch this legend of a singer. YOU ARE IN THE PRESENCE OF GREATNESS, a master of song and guitar and what a voice. THAT VOICE ! THAT VOICE !!

    HAUNTINGLY BEAUTIFUL.

Backed up by the best musicians.

Pay attention the guitar solo’s at the end.

Now turn your radio back on to CBC.

You will understand my DISAPPOINTMENT !

I don't get your taste Mario. I'm sad that so much good music gets a short profile on CBC2 and doesn't get picked up anywhere else. 25 FM stations play 10% of the music that's out there and you can't even tell when you are on different station. I just love most everything I hear on CBC2 and can't imagine not having access to it. Play on, CBC2 and CBC3!

  • Willie - 9 years ago

There are a lot of great tunes on this chart...that commercial radio doesn't play because they are too busy supporting industry financed music that's popular in the USA, and playing Canadian superstars only to fill their content requirements. Great Lake Swimmers, Hayden, Joel Plaskett, Ron Hawkins, Yukon Blond, Ron Sexsmith are all unique and talented Canadians that receive limited airplay in this country. So thanks Radio 2 for the support. And Mario, suck it up!!!

The CBC producers told me they are trying to give a chance to Newbies by giving them some exposure on the radio. There is a problem with that. Why must “WE” suffer with 3rd rate music.

These 20 songs are not great songs. They are “CHARITY” songs. That is why they are being played.

CBC feels sorry for them and wants to help. HOW NOBLE ! They get played on CBC not because they are good, but because they can’t make it on their own in the real world. Songs that no radio station on the planet would play, because if they did, their ratings would be driven into the ground like CBC’s, and people would lose their jobs.

Air Play on CBC is of very little help to these artists because the audience is so tiny. If CBC were smart, THEY WOULD MIX KNOWN GOOD SONGS with the “newbies” in an attempt to build up the listenership. Then the newbies would get greater exposure from a larger audience.

THIS IS SO BASIC TO COMMON SENSE, but not to CBC !

People seem to be confused as to what a Hit is. A “HIT” is defined by massive record sales and maximum air play at radio stations. Billboard has a trusted reputation in defining Hits. However, in CBC’s “Glass Bubble of Non-Reality” they fictitiously call them the Top 20 hits but with no backing for their claim. It’s sad some listeners are so simple as to believe it !

It’s ironic, last month I got criticized for calling the programming of this type of music “LOUSY”, WHEN THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED HAVE ACTUALLY SAID THE SAME THING. (If only 1 or 2 songs of 20 were any good)

The voting is saying the overall music is not appreciated. That is clear.

If you really want to help these newbies, go out and buy their music and attend their concerts.

Exposure on CBC does nothing. So let’s put an end to this “FAILED EXPERIMENT” and LETS GET SOME REAL GOOD MUSIC BACK ON THIS STATION !

Like the episode of “WKRP in Cincinnati” when they did a format change and Dr Johnny Fever zzzzziiiipppps the record off and throws it on the wall and plays “REAL” music with a grin of satisfaction !

    HERE HERE !!
