Should USA Lacrosse rework its stick check rule?

Its a shame the need to win has become so desperate even at the high school level. BOTH of these teams cheated in the semi-final and who knows in how many other games getting there. The stick that scored the goal was not legal and the Summit girls and coaches knew it. Why else would they frantically try and fix it? A sorry story that these young girls have such poor role models in their lives that this action would be condoned in the first place and than brushed aside as OK because they were quick enough to cover up their cheating to comply with an obviously flawed rule book. They would be the Patriots of girls lacrosse if they had won the championship but karma stepped in. Everyone who was involved should be ashamed and needs to take stock in what is important for these girls to learn through the love of their sport.

Summits actions were perfectly justified because the stick was fixed before the stick checked was called. Summit just outsmarted Ridgewood by anticipating the stick check. Anyone is allowed to pull their strings during the game before a check is called. Sorry but the Ridgewood parents and coaches are setting awful examples for the players. It is shown in the video the ridgwood girls throwing their sticks and stomping their feet like a bunch of bratty four year olds.

Real lax fan: Please be clear. Your point is that a player adjusting her own stick after scoring a goal is the SAME THING as a teammate, running 20+ feet to yank the stick out of her hand and spend a good 4-5 seconds working on that stick as the rest of the team celebrates? Is that really the same??? Come on now.
This was definitely planned by the player and the coaches. Doesn't mean it should have any change on the final score or the next game. But don't kid yourself. Summit is a great program, and this black mark will pass. But to say that it happens all the time? No way. Not like this. Coach is responsible for the actions of the player. Buck stops there.

Summit played by the rules. Anyone with common sense or who really cares about lacrosse understands that. Congratulations to them , they deserved to win. Ridgewood should be disappointed, but instead of making excuses about stick checks, maybe they should have protected the ball with 1:30 left and do less celebrating before the game was over. Or maybe they lost because the summit Goalie stood on her head for 50 minutes making 15 saves throughout the game... either way they lost fair and square. In the NY/ Long Island State Championship Finals played on Tuesday June 2nd between Mt. Sinai and Cold Spring Harbor, the winning goal scorer in OT (clearly televised on MSG Varsity by the way and can still be found there online) , yanks repeatedly on her strings immediately after shooting and scoring. Game over. A player is permitted to touch the strings before a stick check is called plain and simple. Perhaps the rule should be changed to be more in line with college but until it is there is nothing more to be said. I give the Summit Player and the Long Island Player credit for knowing the rules and ensuring their team's victory.

Summit should be ashamed. My heart goes out to all of the girls on that Ridgewood team. They worked so hard and earned that. Mike Walsh should be EXTREMELY disappointed in himself and his team. Cheaters never actually win. I think among the lacrosse community, everybody can see who the real winner is in this match. Ridgewood showed composure and I have an immense amount of respect for them. They're consistent class on and off the field is truly admirable.

Cheaters - plain and simple ...Tom Brady mentality... it is OK to cheat as long as you win. This needs to stop. That Summit coach will never be a champion.

Joan, you're WAY out of line. Summit won by cheating. Put another way, if Ridgewood 're-adjusted' their stick prior to the ref's ruling, the outcome would have been different, and Ridgewood - who deserved to have won, would have. Are you suggesting we should teach our children to cheat? What #25 did was wrong, and should not be condoned. What should be put into place is the same process instituted at the college level that calls for stick checks after each goal - at least there would be conformity. For the record, I'm not a fan of either town - just a high school sports fan who enjoys seeing kids excel at sports they love to play. Ridgewood had an incredible year, and deserved to go on to the TOC finals because they EARNED it and didn't cheat to get there.

Brilliant play by #25. If you don't think that every stick on BOTH teams is pushing the limit as far as possible towards an illegal pocket, then you live in a world of unicorns and leprechauns. Ridgewood got busted just prior to that!! Was that your daughter, by the way?

Head's up play by 25. I'm not even a Summit Fan, but think it's hysterical to see the sour grapes from Ridgewood just because they got caught with an illegal pocket a minute prior.

Summit's victory will forever be tainted by their dirty play. They may not have technically broken a rule, but in my book they downright cheated and their coach, players, parents and community should be ashamed. Thank goodness it's not my daughter on that video performing the dirty deed. What has happened to the integrity of high school sports?
