Have you had an encounter with a nuisance bear?

A large full grown black bear was just at my back door. It couldn't get into the green compost bin and hearing us at the windows it wandered off down the street. This large bear comes around almost every other night. We've had the odd occasion is passed summers but this year, the bear comes roaming in from Twin Forks Park pathway connecting to Rose Marie Street. It often wanders the path into Place Hurtubise. I don't condone killing them for trying to survive. We setup wildlife feeding stations in harsh winters. Why not in other difficult seasons.

Ever since they called off the spring bear hunt, the number of bears has been increasing steadily every year. People in Northern Ontario are having to deal with more of them than in other parts of the province. The bears are over-populated, and therefore are more hungry and more dangerous. It made no sense to take away the spring bear hunt, and allow the bear population to increase in such dangerous numbers, and then take away the participation of the MNR in neutralizing and relocating the bears from inside the towns and cities. When they outnumber the population of humans and they begin killing humans...perhaps then, something will be done about it. Unfortunately, it will have to come to that sad ending. Not to mention all the cubs starving and fending for themselves. Very sad.

We have had many encounters with bears over the years - all of which were non threatening. It is true that bears are attracted to campgrounds, etc. because of the fact that they search for food to store it up for winter and when there are no berries - they look for other means of food, such as bird feed, human garbage, etc. Any time we have encountered a bear - we give them their space and they wander off without event. I find Bears to be one of the most beautiful animals there are. We treat them with respect and they in turn treat us the same way. GOTTA LOVE BEARS!! It's like anything else though - if we don't understand it - Kill It. Such a shame that the human race has taken over everything on this planet - even the wildlife habitats. We have truly stolen the homes of soooo much of our wildlife - shame on us.
