Who should win the What's The Big Idea challenge?
JOHN THOMAS, Oatley: Redevelop Mt Kiera as an adventure mecca benefitting all citizens whilst boosting tourism, the local economy and healthy lifestyles. The focus being a downhill mtb trails, zip line, toboggan, tree tops adventure playground and waking/jogging trails. Activities that cater to all ages. Cable car access from the Uni or base of Kiera to the refurbished restaurant (dining)/kiosk which incorporates a display of Mt Kiera and Wollongong (steel works) history plus meeting/function room. A free community bus that runs from the bottom of the cable car station to Nth Gong Station and loops around the beaches and CBD. A synergism linking the mountain, beaches and CBD. Now that's appealing!
JORGE BETHKE, Berkeley: I have visited Germany two years ago to visit my family. They took us to this Gasometer and we were instantly thinking that this could be a great idea for Wollongong.
TOBY BARNHILL, Figtree: I got this idea from a previous Mercury article. An indoor ski facility like that in Dubai. I'll be buying a year round ticket, and I know thousands of other people who would too. It would draw in a significant number of tourists especially from Sydney.
TONI RAWNSLEY, Mount Keira: Run a board walk off south beach where the roundabout near the entertainment centre is located. Remove the bus terminal in front of the park and lease out spaces to various food fans. Have a tourist information van. Put up some extra tables and chairs, have a bike hire station. From here they could then continue on along the blue mile and enjoy the rest of the area. Having the boardwalk run off the end of Crown St over time there could be more cafes, wine bars and boutiques that could lead down from the mall. Achievable, not too expensive.
KAAN, Balgownie: My idea is for a carnival like precinct at Stuart Park. Areas that are often not used to be transformed into fun rides such as a Ferris wheel and prize winning games. This will not only be a must visit site for tourist from the cruise ship but also will entice more people to have their next tourism destination being Wollongong, also this will be a big hit with local Illawarra residents.
