I found it VERY frustrating not being able to type the operations into this comment box so I put the problem on one of my websites as shown below.

The mnemonic for order of operations is BIDMAS in the UK and PEMDAS in the US. This reflects the fact that most (?) mathematicians use PE(M=D)(A=S). There are, thus, two pairs of operators with equal priority and these are executed left to right. In fact, there is an american mathematician (can't remember his name) who is trying to promote the mnemonic PE-Doctor-Donkey. Doesn't quite sound as elegant, I guess.
