I received not one, not 2, but 3 different knives from my wife. And I also got a gun safe from my son. That was unexpected and very welcomed. I have kept my guns just in a closet, hidden, but not out of reach of thieves. I have no small children in my home. I do keep my handgun loaded, in my bedroom, but just out of reach. I am a sound sleeper and I want to force myself to get out of bed before accessing my gun. YMMV. Defense is important, but safety is equally important.
