so lets get this right.
you buy an expensive ring .... you still got a very exensive mortage to pay off, a car to pay off .... holidays to pay off .... kids to bring up .... pay for your kids to goto university ... and everything else to pay ?
and then theres the wonderful divorce, where SHE gets everything and you're left with paying child maintenance ...

This is an odd poll as WHEN the ring was bought has a great influence on the comparative costs. My engagement ring was bought nearly 50 years ago for £30 but its insurance value is over £1500 now. £30 would have been may be 2 and half weeks wages 50 years ago.
