I as a recovering addict, believes this is absurd.
Basicly the government is enabling the use of a very deadly drug. This will not help anything or anyone. All this will do is make users think it's ok to do this.Instead, why don't this governor find a way to crack down on the dealers?????
But no,lets help addicts ruine there lives.
    "Is this FUCKIN guy serious"

This is absurd ! What idiot comes up with this stuff ??? Of course the taxpayers would have to foot the bill. Pay the nurse's salaries , pay the rent on the space , pay for the heat or a/c so these addicts can be comfortable etc etc. I listen to a police scanner often , I am always hearing calls for addicts od'ing and narcan being administered to save them. This cost a couple of thousand dollars each time , of course payed by us the taxpayers. Did we stick the needle in their arm ? No , so why do we have to pay for their stupidity. There are children that are born with cancer and their parents go to the poor house paying the medical cost's. Doesn't that deserve our money over some stupid addict ? I think so , but the bleeding heart liberals say "oh we gotta help the addicts get help" , no we don't ! They chose to put that needle in their arm. A baby didn't choose to be born with cancer ! I have an addict that lives a few blocks away , he is always walking around bumming cigarettes from people. He can't afford cigarettes but he can afford heroin ??? This country needs to wake up fast ! The priorities of the majority of the people are totally screwed up. These addicts have to be stopped being catered to. They chose to stick that needle in the first time , to me that's an idiot. I'm not paying for idiots.

Is this mayor for real? Sounds like he has a heroin habit...what the heck is going on with this world?

Anybody read the NY Times today? Check out the Science section. "...Substance Abuse Treatment begins with Research". This seems a better way to treat addiction.

Addicts need a cure not a fix

  • Dennis - 8 years ago

Addicts should have one choice and one choice only. I happen to have some inside info on this subject. I know without doubt that any addict seeking recovery can get clean, stay clean and live a life of freedom if he or she wants it bad enough....

We have laws that prohibit sale/use but we can't stop the flow - more we ban it the more valuable it is to sell - giving it out would at least reduce theft and crime users commit to feed their habit - and if it became more common might impact the growers/distributors financially by undercutting the market
Nothing else had worked - the more we confiscate the more comes in

After you allow them to shoot up under a nurses direction, are they allowed to leave and possibly drive away under the influence? This seems like a ridiculous idea unless the person is also given counciling to get off drugs.

It's been done in other countries in Europe and actualy it did reduced the OD deaths the users number and the dealer, its sounds crazy but it works. So we may have start accepting metods that are out of the box.

There is a drug called Vivitrol that works for heroine addicts, it's administered every 30 days and it blocks the cravings . County executive Mangano opened up a center for Vivitrol and drug counseling ! That's what u should do ! Help the people quit the habit not feed it ! You should call the company I'm sure they would help different communities .

As a seasoned RN, this is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard. There are other treatment options to break addiction, which would be a much wiser investment with longer-lasting results

I don't know much about this program to say I agree or disagree. What I do know is that there are no solutions for combating heroin addiction. If this is a step down program of sorts, where they are supervised, counseled and then supported to get them off heroin, then it might be better than anything else out there. What are the results of the Canadian facilities? I would need more information. I've been blessed with a child that at 19, seems to have absolutely no interest in drugs. And I thank God everyday. That can change in a heartbeat. If I had a heroin addicted child, I would want everything and anything that would keep my child alive and stop them from an OD. If this is a possible solution, why not test it? Again, I'm on the fence. But I would want to save my child and I think most people would. So, I'm leaning more towards yes. More info is needed. What is the plan and how does it work. Ironically, my child is at Ithaca College. He sent me the article yesterday. I'm glad his eyes are open. We need to save the lives of young people. I don't know what the solution is, but maybe, just maybe they are onto something.

This is one RN who WILl NEVER work in a heroin clinic! Who is paying for their illegal use of drugs anyway? Me and you! They shoot up and collect the disability checks while we work? Who can tell me ONE good reason that this is acceptable to anyone!

  • Ann - 8 years ago

It only promotes and proliferates the problem. You tell a child don't touch the oven you'll get burned however, it's okay cause we can make the pain go away. Just do it where I can see you.
Know what you; still get burned and they leave scars

  • John - 8 years ago

It's not going to make a difference.
After the addict has had thier supervised dose with a RN or medical personnel they are going to continue to shoot up anyway on thier own. With or without medical staff present will not matter. Most will not use service and will be so scared of being arrested after they leave this facility because they will be either impaired or be carrying illegal drugs on them. For police I would just sit outside the facility, it would be like shooting fish in a barrel.

No!! another total waste of tax $

We hear constantly about the rising death rate from heroin overdoses. In 2015, there were over 10,000 deaths nationally from heroin. It's time we face the fact that the war on drugs has not worked and that more of the same will just result in more deaths and anguish for the families. Kudos to the mayor of Ithaca for daring to try a new approach. Drug addiction needs to be addressed in the medical arena and taken out of the criminal justice system. Doing the same thing over and over and over again and hoping for a different result is the definition of insanity.

I'm all for it -- give them a hot dose -- the problem will take care of itself !

  • Jt - 8 years ago

This is as crazy as the pot cards that are coming out in NYS. As in other states the card is give out to young people for a hang nail so what makes this any different? Look I don't agree with medical marijuana and I don't agree with this.

That shouldn't even be s question! Totally rediculous.

Allowing a person who is addicted to heroin a place to go to shoot up seems so wrong. So wrong. However, go the distance in your thinking. It then gives a main location where we can locate them to help them. These people live on the street, commit crimes to get their fix, end up in hospitals because of infection (we then pay for this!). Wouldn't it be a means to an end if we could find them, get a handle on helping them and see exactly how bad this problem is so monies for help could be focused and streamlined. And calling it a drug "habit" is not appropriate when it comes to heroin. The medical professionals have proven it goes beyond a habit, it is a craving that effect the brain so bad that the person is no longer capable of reason. It then becomes a true medical disease just like a mentally disabled person. To expect a person addicted to heroin to think clearly do the right thing is ridiculous reasoning on our part.

I do not believe that having such a facility that allows people to shoot up heroin legally would decrease the amount of heroin use on Long Island. If anything, it will show them that we are, as a society, not only acknowledging but accepting their addiction and providing state paid services to ensure that they don't kill themselves in the process. I am not suggesting that heroin users should die from overdoses but I certainly do not believe that this in anyway will reduce or deter current or future heroin users. Additionally, it will serve to show the younger generation of potential heroin users that we are a society accepting of such behavior. If such a facility were to open, it definitely should not be funded by our tax dollars.
