only up to ch24 (yep, I started late!), and I do not normally respond to characters in novel, well not with much passion anyway, but if gervaise could take a long bloody walk off a very short pier, I would be dancing with glee. all the characters are really well drawn, each with flaws and positives, but Gervaise just drives me to distraction. I get he has a bloody hard time growing up, but he really is a miserable, self centred, boring, user. well done! not many authors get me as riled up! :-)
