At Seoul 1988, Allison Jolly and Lynne Jewell win the first ever women’s sailing gold medal despite having to repair their jib mid-race when it was damaged while dropping off a large wave.
At London 2012, Brit Ben Ainslie wins his fourth straight gold medal, arriving to the home crowd singing “Land of Hope and Glory” as he became the winningest sailor in Olympic history with his fifth straight podium finish.
At Rome 1960, Denmark’s Paul Elvstrom becomes the first athlete in any sport to win four straight gold medals in the same individual event.
At Beijing 2008, the mast on the boat of Denmark’s Jonas Warrer and Martin Kirketerp broke just 15 minutes before the start of the medal race. Croatian sailors Pavle Kostov and Petar Cupac, who hadn’t qualified for the final, raced down to the marina to lend their boat to the Danes, who started four minutes after the race began, but ended up winning gold.
