The main trouble with a national curriculum is that what is in the curriculum is decided by a process which comes very close to ensuring that there will never be any time in school for any topic that isn't inluded in the national curriculum. This fault is compounded by a tendency of important things which are currently unpopular with the people controlling curriculum definition process to get left out (or removed if already in).
