If the Packers don’t make the playoffs, should Mike McCarthy and Ted Thompson be fired?

Ted has the real problem of never being able to draft a top tier player because the Packers make the play-offs every year. that is how the NFL is set up. not since he got Matthews early has he had a top player show up. This team is built on lower draft choices and free agents. yet we are successful. be careful what you wish for. I like our team and I like our leadership.

Based on the past consistent success neither will be fired at the end of this season. However, if the offense continues to under perform either or both, Clemens and Bennett will be gone for certain, two straight years of not finding the solution means someone has to go. Even with the success McCarthy has had his approach (play not to lose instead of to win) was evident in the Seattle debacle and led to the loss of his play calling position, you have to believe that was an edict, not his choice as well as the firing of Slocum, his best friend, if Mike makes that call Slocum is still the special teams coach. A sub standard 2017 season McCarthy cannot survive, they will gladly eat his final year's salary.

Really? You gonna find somebody better?

These days fans are spoiled. I lived through the Green Bay Packers of the 70's and 80's. Every year I followed the "Pack" religiously. How many teams can you say have had success for 10+years? I have faith that McCarthy will figure out what other teams are doing and adjust like he did last night. I do believe in the west coast offense and the creativity of our coaching. To me there is only one other coach that compares to our coach and that is Bill Bellichek. I believe if any coach needs to be replaced it's Dom Capers. The talent on that Defense they should be "Dominant". If there not this year "Dom" has to go.

Even before the Seattle debacle, I thought MM's stay was nearing an end. There were little symptoms that only to seem have gotten more noticeable since last 2015 season. Doesn't mean that he is not a good HC. I like him a lot. But there are many signs that his grip on the team is worn out and slipping. That Seattle loss was a killer and I think he and his staff haven't been able to shake the shadow of their collapse that day. We see many troubles plaguing this team. Not only with Rodgers, but other players too. Fat RBs, Bad execution, dropped passes, fumbles, penalties, predictable plays, curfews issues, etc. Years ago when MM said he would fix a problem, it got fixed. Now they keep happening or get worse. One day MM will be done in GB, I hope it is sooner than later. I am fearful this season the Packers will struggle to make the playoffs, then get in and get bounced out again. Next year we will see the same old thing and hear the same old story and agonize over the same old results.

TT should stay. He is one of the best. But lately he has left the cupboard bare in some spots. ~Go Packers!

Why? So we can experience the same success of teams like the Eagles (last title 1960), Falcons (never), or Browns (1956?). Keep TT and MM as long as they remain hungry, savvy, and successful. And it appears they are indeed all three of those.

Ted Thompson has constructed a terrible roster for his last year. Looking forward for the son of Ron Wolf to take over March 1, 2017. Mccarthy knows he will be on a short leash

  • Ken J - 8 years ago

Of course not! It's laughable reading all these blogs from you self-proclaimed "experts". MM and TT have forgotten more football than all of you know put together. If you tried to talk football with them, they would chew you up and spit you out!

TT is one of the best GMs in the game and, given the Packers' financial reality, his draft-and-develop philosophy has kept the team out of salary cap hell and competitive for nearly the entire time he's been in the top spot. I wouldn't fire TT, but I also don't want to lose GM-in-waiting Eliot Wolf to another team.

As far as head coach, I think the team needs a fresh voice. There is a theory, which I think McGinn cited in his preview piece, that a coach shouldn't stay in the same place for more than seven years. McCarthy's been here for more than 10. I think it's time for a change at the top of the coaching staff.

I ALWAYS SAID IF ROGERS DID NOT GO FOR THE GLORY TO MAKE LOTS F YARDS WITH LONG PASSES
THAT DO OT WORK, BUT GET OUT OF THE POCKET, SCRAMBLE TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT SO HE CAND SEE A RECEIVER AND THROW SHORT FOR A POSSITIVE CATCH AND THEN THE RUN FOR FIRST DOWNS THEY WOULD HAVE WON EVERY GAME THEY PLAYED. LOOK AT OLD FILMS OF BRETT.

You've got to be kidding! Seven consecutive playoff appearances with a 4-2 record, and we're having this conversation. The biggest problems facing the Packers aren't the coaches but rather jaded fans and sports reporters who think they're coaches.

The Eagles fired Andy Reid and have had nothing but problems since. MM and TT are two of the very best. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. They are proven winners and especially proven over a long period of time. They are a great asset and credit to Green Bay Packer football. They are smart steady consistent and will continue to have high quality football in Green Bay.

Packers do need a change Their offense is so stale and predictable that good defenses shut them down easily Receivers can't get open because we not only don't recognize the lack of talent, but keep running the same terrible plays(4 wr's running 20 yard poor routes) Ted's build through the draft philosophy continues to keep us good enough to beat the bad teams and make the playoffs, but no longer talented enough to win it all...even with a first ballot HOF QB. We aren't creative on offense and often times ( though not against the run this year) the defense collapses! Time for a change!

  • Pack Fan - 8 years ago

MM : Yes --- not creative enough in offensive designs

TED: No --- Decent job drafting, just need to get more help from free agency

  • Bucks fans - 8 years ago

Heck no. Those guys have had to much success to be canned after one poor year, but I think if the packers run a pas first offensive like they did tonight they are making the playoffs

  • Jerry Kassees - 8 years ago

They need a change either way
