"Do you support churches welcoming the gay community?" is wrong on so many levels. If God has created us all, who are we to pick and choose whom we will welcome, least of all churches, which claim to follow God. Replace "gay" in your question with ANY other identifier ("female," "black," "youth," "Chinese," "white," "special needs") and see how it sounds. Come on. This is 2017 and you are the print media. You have specialized training in how to word things. It's your civic and moral duty to use it. Otherwise, what are you playing at?
The Beacon missed the mark on this one completely. Never should have posted a poll like this - it is offensive and suggests that members of the LGBT community need a special invitation to attend a church. An apology is in order.
I am requesting that this poll be removed immediately. I was shocked when I saw it. It is offensive, and homophobic. I am responding as a concerned gay Edmonds resident. I also serve as Chair of the Edmonds Diversity Commission. This is not representative of the community I live in. I'm sure you would not have allowed this poll if the word, "white", "black", "asian", "muslim" etc.... were put in place of the word "gay". This poll promotes further discrimination of the LGBTQ community.
This poll is offensive! Shame on the Edmonds Beacon for publishing such divisive question. I thought Edmonds was a "Safe" city--one that welcomes all people regardless of race, sexual orientation, religion, etc.
WOW! Is this poll for real????......no wonder Edmonds needs a Diversity Council! Can NOT believe this poll was even thought of, let alone allowed to run. Churches are God's house. Everyone is welcome.
This is offensive. The editor and anyone involved should receive diversity training. A follow up piece exploring why this type of phrasing encourages division and is contrary to what the Beacon is supposed to stand for needs to be run.
As everyone has already noted, this poll is incredibly homophobic, and insulting. Please remove it and replace it with an apology to the LGBTQ community for allowing people to have their homophobia legitimated by an option in a poll.
This poll is incredibly offensive and has no place in our paper (or anywhere else). Please remove it from your site. Edmonds is a welcoming, tolerant, and intelligent community and this poll reflects nothing of our values. I look forward to reading an apology alongside the retraction. Perhaps some education would help you craft messages of support and tolerance in future polls. I will forward some resources to your office.
Wow. I can't believe the Edmonds Beacon would run such a poll. Not OK! This is so disrespectful and hostile to LGBTQ members of our community. Not to mention inflammatory. The editors of this publication should be ashamed of themselves.
I'm nearly speechless that this poll was allowed to run. I expect to see some kind of retraction, along with a whole lot of inclusivity in the near future, otherwise I am done reading and following. Despicable.

I can't believe people actually voted "no" on this. Well, sadly I can. There are always wrong-headed jerks who are okay with racism and bigotry and homophobia and will answer as such under the cover of anonymity.
I hope this was your paper's effort to say "See, not a single person in Edmonds is a homophobe or supports the actions of these heinous individuals" but this is an incredibly wrong way to go about it.
And by the way, yes, I fully support any church that is inclusive to all. It's called walking the walk. The people who answered "no" should really go back and read their New Testament.

This poll is so offensive. It doesn't make sense to me that any establishment, especially a church, would want to perpetuate hate. A more constructive thing to do could have been, "we have been hanging a rainbow flag to let our community know that we support any and all who come to us. The flag has been stolen 4 times. Church is meant to be a safe place, a sanctuary, we hope the community will support us in this decision." There should never have been a question here in the first place.

This poll is loaded bigotry, racism, & divisiveness typical of systemized oppression. How about asking constructive, open questions about the community - the kinds of questions that are conducive to a healthy community, abundant with diversity, inclusion & positive actions.

This poll needs to be taken down. It is incredibly offensive and homophobic. Is this the 1980's again? Really, a truly scary poll, I expected more from our community newspaper. Somebody needs some diversity training.
