I know mom was born in Effingham. It is a special town, with the old court house now being remodeled and made into a Veterans museum. They love their Vets.

This contest has been a wonderful way to unite people and organizations not just in the greater Peoria area (Peoria Public Schools, Bradley University, our Convention and Visitor's Bureau, the Chamber Of Commerce and Economic Development Corportation and neighborhood associations), but also companies we do business with around the country like Maurer Stutz, TERRA, Millenia and Foth. Not to mention residents, former residents, Sister City siblings and friends near and far. Bravo, ELGL for not only Engaging Local Government Leaders, but for also uniting communities and the people who live there!

Today I learned that it cost $43 to tear down the market where Peoria's City Hall now stands.

  • sally jo - 7 years ago

In the 1890s, Peoria sold a TON of booze--in fact, paid more internal revenue tax on booze than any other city in the US---AND ALL THAT CASH CAME THROUGH PEORIA'S CITY HALL!

  • Nick - 7 years ago

My favorite thing to do at the Peoria city hall is running up the steps and beating my coworkers who took the elevator.

  • Jeff - 7 years ago

Way to compete Effingham - by a city one tenth the size. Keep voting.

We appreciate being compared to a Dental Office. We are pround to have two major dental corporations located in Effingham. Heartland Dental headquarters are located here and Patterson Companies headquarters which provides software to dental offices across the United States. These are two of our largest employers. Of course we can't forget we are also home to several great family dental offices.

  • Peter - 7 years ago

    Maybe, greatest of them all

Peoria City Hall is a beautiful building in the lovely Peoria downtown area!

If they were still with us, I bet former Peorians like Richard Pryor, Betty Friedan, Dan Folgelberg, Archbishop Fulton Sheen and Jack Brickhouse would vote for Peoria's beautiful City Hall. ELGL, we think you should give us a vote for each one of them. Pretty please?

  • Irv - 7 years ago

    For effingham, JMW.. Sorry :(

I'm just thrilled at the repsonse and participation within both communities. I really hope there is no cheating.... PERIOD. That would be really sad :(

  • JMW - 7 years ago

Cory - is that for Peoria or Effingham?

  • Cory - 7 years ago

Ive shared on several social media platforms with my followers. It's being promoted heavily on local radio. City council meeting last night spoke on the voting. We are all very very proud of our community. Just one of my Facebook posts received a handful of shares. The citys page as well as the museums page has been pushing this heavily as well.

  • Kathy - 7 years ago

Effingham and Peoria have been very active on Twitter and Facebook each with multiple shares of posts, ELGL has 3 media clippings for Peoria. I am not sure about Effinghams media

  • Todd - 7 years ago

It is great to see that central and southern Illinois is supporting Effingham.

  • JMW - 7 years ago

Peoria is hardly promoting this at all. I also couldn't find anything about it in the current Effingham paper, or the city/county web sites or FB pages. Over the last hour, they have gained over 120 votes. Just seems very odd, that many votes in that short of time. Peoria was ahead by almost 500 yesterday.

  • Kathy - 7 years ago

I'm pretty sure Peoria also has twice as many votes in the last round, please someone check the ips, Effingham has been working very hard to promote this as well as Peoria. Could all of our votes not mean we have strong communities behind each town.

  • JMW - 7 years ago

Whoever is running this poll needs to check for duplicate ISP addresses in the votes. There is very clearly something fishy going on here.

  • Dayne - 7 years ago

Even kids love the historic Peoria city hall.

You should see the wall of Mayors in Peoria's City Hall! So historic!

  • Bobbie jo - 7 years ago

You should see the wall of Mayors in Peoria's City Hall! So historic!

  • JMW - 7 years ago

How is it possible that Effingham already has twice as many votes as it did in the last round? Watching now, they are getting 5-10 votes every few minutes.

  • Warren - 7 years ago

Another neat thing about Peoria are the old wooden chairs from theaters that are now gone from Peoria's downtown--a tribute to their entertainment past.

  • Susie - 7 years ago

Peoria's council chambers got even more colorful when former Councilman Gary Sandberg would bring his parrot ,Jellybean, to council meetings.
