Simon - read the same time as you - first year 6th (Yr 12) but we did this slightly more formally with our Biology teacher - Mike Cawson at Llandysul Grammar School - at the weekly science lunch-time meeting. There were three of us who read it from cover to cover - read chapter one week and then discussed the following. So I was 16/17 when I read.
