I love to cook and entertain, however most of our friends don't. We used to have a gourmet club, where each couple hosted a dinner every other month. However, as our children got older and more involved in sports and activities, it fell by the wayside and now we get together once or twice a year. Because I love to cook, I find a lot of our friends reluctant to reciprocate, as they are intimidated because they don't enjoy it like I do. I love to host and try out new menus and do the whole flower arrangement, table setting thing. However, most of our friends don't enjoy that, so are hesitant to reciprocate.

It's more a matter of time-I don't have any spare time to plan, prep, clean, entertain, with two jobs. So while I like the idea and enjoy going to other's homes for a dinner party, I rarely do them myself.

We are in a dinner group with 5 couples and it started 30 years ago here in Northern California. We make it easy and the couple hostessing assigns each couple a dish to bring. I am so glad we kept this tradition going and that all 5 couples are still married and together. Sometimes we do a fun activity after dinner, play a game or just sit and catch up. I would highly recommend it!

Maybe it's the times? Do Southerners still entertain this way? I'd like to imagine they do. Before we moved "out west" in the mid-'70s, we hosted dinner parties in our home once or twice a year and were feted in friends' homes. Now, in the Pacific Northwest, it's reservations somewhere. Oh, well.
