    Dear Editor:
It is time to have the Mexican State Department issue a safety warning for Mexicans in the USA. School shootings are making everyone less safe.Stay away from schools, for ones own safety.

    Than you,

Federales in the back of open trucks, with rifles. No, they do not make me feel safe. I've had experiences with being pulled over on hwys near the US. You don't offer a bribe, they leave an opportunity to pretend that you are asking for their assistance. Horrible. But in my city, my neighborhood, every Monday is mordida monday. My local cop really helps me and he doesn't earn enough from the government. He has been very helpful, even coming to the house to check why the door was open when a realtor was showing the house. I am happy to pay him the small amount for his help. I've known him and his family for years. Today he stopped over only for a chat. Too bad they don't earn enough to support their family while being subjected to gang violence against them.

Hell, no, I don’t feel safer. The cops are the bad guys!

Although it perpetuates corruption, I have to agree with Peter. Paying off a cop is akin to telling a white lie.

Lived in Cabo for 14 years. We had a saying about the police. "For 200 pesos they will help you bury the body". I ran a red light once when I first got there and got pulled over. The cop was almost crying when I refused to pay him and opted to pay the fine at the town hall.
Having said all that, people have to understand that the police can't support a family on what they are paid so they have to take bribes to feed their children. After I understood that I was sympathetic to the officers plight. If you do something bad pay the cop. It's better than the money going into some corrupt politician's pocket.
