This is the toughest one for me. Can I vote against both of them? Not that they’re bad movies, but they each rival Fight Club for “most irritating fanbase.” The number of times I’ve been told my feelings on comedies are invalid because I have anything other than unmitigated praise for TBL or GD (or Caddyshack, for that matter) has really soured my opinions of both. Good riddance.
I feel like The Big Lebowski has become even more of a sentimental favourite, given some of the fawning coverage it received online last week to mark its 20th anniversary. It's certainly a well-acted and enjoyably loopy film. If I were to rank the films of the Coen Brothers, though, it likely wouldn't make the Top 10.
I'm voting for what I consider the finest achievement from not just one, but two comic geniuses: Bill Murray and the late Harold Ramis. Groundhog Day, I got you babe.
I don't understand the love for Groundhog Day. I've been amused by it, but I don't think I have ever laughed while watching it. Not a good sign for a comedy. Now, The Big Lebowski isn't the funniest comedy either. But it is written so well and the dialogue and the characters are so unique, it outshines Groundhog Day. By a lot.
Moral of the story: if Groundhog Day loses, we just keep starting the poll over until voters get it right, right?
I admit that I'm on the lower end of appreciation for both of these movies. They're both fine, and they both have classic moments, but neither one completely works for me. Anyway, I'm giving it to The Big Lebowski, simply on the grounds that it stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, and it doesn't star Andie MacDowell.
You may think that Groundhog Day should win this round Josh but "Hey, well that's just, like...your opinion man". The Dude abides and moves on to the next round.
If the loser's screenplay goes into the fire, I've lost 90% of my favorite movie quotes either way.
I voted for Big Lebowski, but it doesn't have the slightest prayer of winning this one.
I couldn't vote in the Groundhog vs Edward last match-up, I really couldn't choose, but Groundhog Day is the film I can watch over and over and over and adore it just as much, laugh just as much, cry just as much, feel the warm, wonderful glow of joyous cinematic perfection and Bill Murray at his bright shining finest. Hate voting against Joel and Ethan again, love Lebowski, although not as much as some of their other films, but the groundhog will always win this match-up. Edward would have won it too.
The popular theory says Bill Murray spent over 10,000 years in that loop. As popular as The Big Lebowski is, I feel in a weird way that it has fallen out of favor with film buffs in recent years, and so in this matchup it feels strangely like an underdog against what many people feel is the apex of all perfect romantic comedies. But I ask myself a simple question......if I was stuck in a 10,000 year loop, which one of these films would I want to survive in the available pantheon? Which has more to offer on endless rewatches?

I don't think I've ever truly watched Groundhog Day as an adult, but that's because I saw it so many times as a child and I've been turned off of it since. On the other hand, I look forward to every opportunity I have to see Lebowski again, so this was an easy choice.
The Big Lebowski has a quality that transcends it's story and performances. A film I've watched over and over and that I never get tired of.
Groundhog Day is the best use of Bill Murray.
Lebowski, sorry, don't care. I'd much rather watch A Serious Man or Fargo if I want to laugh, or True Grit if I'm in the mood for Bridges. There's a reason every stoner in college had a poster of Lebowski. Maybe I just wasn't the target audience. I like it fine, but I shed no tears for it
Two nearly perfect comedies made from nearly perfect scripts featuring nearly perfect, iconic performances. How do you choose? Well, one has Phillip Seymour Hoffman and the other doesn't. Seen through that lens, the choice becomes easy.
Wow. This one hurts. As much as I love Groundhog Day, it's Lebowski. Groundog Day is, basically, a perfect movie, but it's not the movie my dad and I bonded over. It's not the movie we quote to each other endlessly. It's not the movie we attend 'cons for. It's not the movie for which we have action figures hanging on our walls.
Groundhog Day may be perfect, but it doesn't tie the room together.
I know there's lots of Lebowski love out there, especially on its 20th anniversary, but for me this isn't even close. Groundhog Day doesn't waste time with psychedelic sequences and a meandering plot. It's perfectly structured and paced, finding just the right mix of comedy, sentiment, and big ideas that's hard to come by these days. Determining which film has Peak Bill Murray is another conversation; I'll only say this is the performance that comes to mind first whenever I hear his name.
With several other Coen Bros. films remaining in the bracket, I think the Dude will be pretty laidback about his film being incinerated for all time.
