What would you like better...A 4 Song yearly BT EP or a 12 Song BT Album every 3 years ?

    Hey MrBT!

The idea of releasing a mini-album about once every year or so sounds great! I think I speak for most fans when I say that no matter how patient we say we are for the next album, we are always on the wait to devour the next work of art from you. Not that we want to push you, but that we know it's going to be a great experience. I think this way it really does make sense for you right now, as an all-around artist, to generate mini-albums that each focus on one main idea or technique. It could be a thesis for whatever idea currently intrigues you or a compilation of a handful of tracks you're not quite sure what to do with. It also could be in addition to an album every 3 years. In any case, I think whatever you give us will be worthwhile and guaranteed to be teeming with brilliance and love :) Go for it!

I love your music. I would like an album if I could get one. It's so much fun to sit back and relax to it. But if all I get is a 4 tunes a year...then that's what it is. Love your work reguardless of what you choose to do.

  • Marcus - 14 years ago

Your music has been the sound track to my life, so I would vote for 4 songs ever year. Three years is to long to wait. LOL I really wish I could have heard the song your did Sarah McLachlan.

    ~M~

  • James - 14 years ago

If you could find a way to download your tracks from the studio and straight to my brain I'd be fine with that. :D

  • George Keppas - 14 years ago

You should give as music when is ready!!!
I vote for EP i will buy EP as mp3 and ill buy in disc the albums every 3 years!

Also i think you should release "A Laptop Symphony DVD"

Can you reupload the Music freedom files i want to buy that stuff man!!!

  • Whitney Parcells - 14 years ago

Love you BT!!!! Your music helps me get though each and every day, therefore I vote fresh BT tracks every year! xo

  • Chris L - 14 years ago

Release whenever you feel you feel like it. I wouldn't mind an EP every year AND an album every 3 years, even if there's overlap on the songs, as long as there are some extra remixes or B sides on the EPs then I'd pick up all of them. That way you can release your songs in the small batches that feel most natural to you as you're creating them, but still pull together your best material for one of your amazing and epic albums that you do so well and for more traditional promotional activities.

  • Rob - 14 years ago

Personally, I would rather you take whatever time you need to compose a song the way you want it rather than trying to make any sort of deadline.

  • Hum4n After All - 14 years ago

Just do what you can BT! When ever you get the time just crank out a new song and release it on Beatport. Just keep 'em coming!

  • Toni Kabamitov - 14 years ago

Well maybe a new song with Tiesto would be a good idea. My all time favorite songs are "Love Comes Again" and "Break My Fall".

  • Ed - 14 years ago

Would be happy with a 4-track epic EP every year as long as there were also videos and remixes. Don't do all the work yourself, dude!

  • Travis - 14 years ago

The divergent desires for both more frequent releases and for your masterful album experience make this choice extremely difficult. After much thought, I suggest that you not constrain yourself to a frequent release schedule in order to guarantee yourself the necessary time to develop projects to your very high standards.

However, should you decide some tracks don't fit the theme of an album project or wish to explore an experimental musical direction, I would be most happy to receive a small collection of tasty musical morsels out of band of your normal release schedule. Or perhaps a free/subscription "fan club" could be the vehicle for this type of material?

Most of all, I/we want you to be fulfilled and happy with your creative process and its results. A happy BT is the best kind of BT. :)

  • Skizphoto - 14 years ago

4 smashing cohesive tracks a year would give you a chance to break away from the overall theme of the album more freaquently and push more musical exploration which I am totally down for. When you go exploring you push yourself and the result is nothing ever short of astonishing. It may be a good idea to supplement the shorter EPs with some of your rare unreleased goods thrown in for filler.

I have always thought it would be nice if you threw in a couple of sound bites either before your tracks or maybe one long diatribe at the end of the album explaining some of the work that went into the album, more about your processes and inspirations, Give the listeners more background. Just some thoughts. We enjoy your mind Brian.

  • Paulo - 14 years ago

I really would prefer to wait three years before the album, because man!! your music is not just limited to the track itself; your music also gives a feeling that is the result of the whole thing, the mix of all songs leaves you with a general feeling after listening to the whole album, and personally I think that an EP couldn't catch that. This Binary Universe is a big example of what I try to mean.

But on the other hand, you are the genius here xD and everything you have done has been just perfect, so this is my opinion, these are your fans' opinions, just read them, check out the poll and do your best, as always.

    Peace, dude!!

  • April Thornton - 14 years ago

An EP every year sounds very cool. Maybe at the end of each year, you can have 4 or 5 songs with at least 1 music video and a few remixes. And if you want to get all analytical about it, why not divide up b/w vocal songs and non-vocal songs in your tracklist equally or not. Also I don't know if other artists are doing this but a live video of you talking about your songs and the inspiration for each one could come with the EP. Or maybe not, it's up to you. :) Can't wait to hear more of your music.

  • Chris Royall - 14 years ago

I vote on the "What makes BT happy" button

  • Jordan Larsen - 14 years ago

EP every year would great! Why would anyone want to wait? I'd much rather have small doses of awesomeness, rather than one large dose that generally takes me 3 months to fully digest (and that's listening daily mind you). Your the best, just keep making music!

  • Erik - 14 years ago

4 songs + remixes make a nice release these days

  • Anthony - 14 years ago

I like the idea of waiting for am album. Seems to make me appreciate it more. But if you do that, you've got the added pressure of our anticipation soooo... Totally up to you.

Either way, I love your work, BT! Keep it up, and NEVER underestimate the difference you can make in ones life.

    Peace.

  • shayna - 14 years ago

I loved the intent of the latest album: an experience, not a group of individual tracks. I loved that experience, the emotion, the imagery. It is intense and beautiful and absolutely awe-inspiring, and I'd rather have that experience after three years of excited anticipation.

  • Monica - 14 years ago

Gawd, four new tracks a year would be awesome but a new album every three years is totally worth the wait. Which ever option delivers a better and more polished set of works

  • Bex - 14 years ago

I'd have to say I vote for the album every 3 years.Selfishly I WOULD love to hear new music by you every year! as it keeps my life going.. your music is so positive and amazing. BUT I do realize that the reason your music is so good...is you put so much time and thought into it. Thereby releasing an AMAZING album every few years...
I wish I could vote for both... perhaps we could see one new song a year? or even remixs or collaborations? And then new album being its own entity that flows together.

THANKS BT FOR YOUR AWESOME MUSIC! THM is the soundtrack of my life right now! Kudos

  • Riku - 14 years ago

If a 4 track EP means more remixes than a single album would yield, I'll go for that. Otherwise, I love the albums.

  • Steve - 14 years ago

I really loved how THM came together as one complete album, one masterpiece... this displays what I see as the most impressive form of artistry... to create an album that flows together as one cohesive work of individual songs with their own character. Therefore, I would prefer an album every coupe years.

However... since not every song ... See Moreultimately ends up on an album... it would be sweet for BT to release 1 or 2 singles with remixes by other artists every year. :)

I do like the idea of BT doing some type of music vignette for an EP if he has an idea he is playing with that is developed in a few songs but not quite enough for an album. I know BT mentioned playing with different meters in the Wired interview... a 4-5 song EP of songs in different metres (5/8, 6/8, 9/8, etc...) would be really cool. If anyone could make an awesome dance track in 5/8... it would be BT.... think Mars from the Planets by Holst, Gladiator opening battle song, or Isengard theme from Lord of the Rings.

  • JulietteTrichet - 14 years ago

You're one of the few artists who take their time to do an album and that's why your music is so great, so unique because it's true music, it's literaly art. Nowadays, too many artists make commercial music because they want to release more music per year. Ok to have 4 songs yearly, of course, because we love your music, but only if it doesn't make you lose your way as an artist the way some others lost their one, only if you keep being that amazing artist who makes us remember that in this world where commercial and easily done music is growing, true and passionate artists still exist. Otherwise, I think it's not worth it.

  • Djosos - 14 years ago

Make your 4Ep every years, and a 15 song album in 3 years (3x4EP + 3 bonus track). Enjoy

  • ThomasDoggett - 14 years ago

I agree with many of the comments: "quality over quanity" it's the reason I love your albums. The time between them means you are experimenting and that means the next album is going to have a new direction. So if you did an album a year, it is possible your 2013 release may sound like THM. It may not but I prefer the surprise. As many times
as I've listened to Binary Universe, I still hear new things.

  • OllieD - 14 years ago

BT, I agree with a lot of the comments that your 12-song album flows so nicely as a single masterpiece, but I'm sorry, 3 years is too long to wait for the genius! I'm happy for your songs to flow together as groups of 4 :) peace

  • Soulvei - 14 years ago

I think you should do whatever your creative soul tells you to do.

  • Col Webster - 14 years ago

Can I not pick both!! loving your work dude :)

  • Phoenix - 14 years ago

    Anticipation makes the wait sweeter!

  • Jen Aside - 14 years ago

    Alternate! =D

  • Dominic - 14 years ago

I think if you did one giant 12 song album every three yrs it gives you more time to be unique and creative. If you shovel out a album every year it would loose its magic I think. I mean ure the worlds greatest musician so u would never get dull but...if you released yearly albums it would beacome to mainstream I think...none of us want that im sure :)

  • Kevin Quickle - 14 years ago

First, thank you for this opportunity to speak to you directly in this format. My thought is…IF…there is a chance that not everything has to go through your label, then something like Bandcamp or Soundcloud would be perfect for the interim releases.

You've got no physical media or manufacturing costs to incur. You get a faster release of music to your fans - You can release songs one at a time if you want. Also, YOU have the ability to move between pay/free/"pay what you feel is fair" downloads for each song as YOU see fit to do. (For example, make "EP releases" available to download for a fee, but maybe demo versions, special fan club only remixes, or even a download of a live show the next morning to all ticketholders available as free, special downloads.)

There are ALOT of different delivery options out there nowadays, and many arguments are being made for both old and new school methods. Nettwerk has been using SoundCloud to stream lead singles and such before some of their artist’s albums are being released. Even RUSH is most likely going to release 3 or 4 songs this year (and considering digital-only downloads, I've heard), then tour with them, then go back and finish the rest of their next album. I think most artists would agree that the more people that hear their music, the better it ultimately is for the artist. The more people that hear BT, definitely the better, I think!

IMHO, you are an EXTREMELY creative person and likely, the only person in the “music industry” that could be called a true GENIUS, especially as a composer. You function and ENVISION on a plane higher than mere melodies and rhythms, and I personally don’t think that can be said about ANY of the Great Composers in history - ever. I would think to limit yourself to the “traditional” methods of releasing your music to the public would feel restrictive at this point in your life – that seems evident to me every time you send a tweet, post a picture of something, share a video, or engage your fans in a live video stream. But as social media and YOUR use of it has grown, do we all still feel like “just fans” to you, or more like friends? You question us. You challenge us. You empathize with us. You embrace us, and you RESPECT us. Does that sound or feel like “old school” music industry? The fact that you are considering a change-up to what you've traditionally done speaks for itself.

Wow. I didn’t sit down to comment here and expect to write a novel. Regardless, whatever and however you are willing to share with the world, I am thankful for it and happy to accept.

  • David Chorvinsky - 14 years ago

    Twitter-EchoOfHaiku

I love the idea of having new music from you every year! Yet your work as a complete on an album is so unbelievable to I would hate to lose that.

To some up my tweets on it here's what I think based on your comments.

If you do work on things in themed 'bundles' then I see no reason not to release them like that. It would be a great way to get stuff out to all of us fan who are dying to here what you are working on.

I think that if you could release them like that and then, every third or fourth year, bring that material together as an album would be amazing. One thing you talked to me (the kid with the glowsticks) about in the coffee shop party in Maryland was how you chose the version of Every Other Way that was released as a single. If you could take the bundles of material and bring them together, and thereby creating an album like work out of the pieces, it seems that you could also create more material that would combine them and create that uniform work.

That way you both -release yearly material -release epic albums -the ep and album, while sharing material, give a completely different experience -and everyone is hopefully happily listening to your work!

  • Susan - 14 years ago

I'd like to believe that the creative process is exactly that -- a process. A not one that can be carefully planned or pigeon-holed into a timeframe. Let the music happen and when it does, we'll be ready for it.

  • Héctor - 14 years ago

BT it´s about your Inspiration, if it is every day - every week - every month then it´s great, i thing what is important it´s that you show us all what u do, cause it´s art. I wonder if u consider to work - collaborate with another musician? could be very interesting and historic some work with Jean Michel Jarre!

  • Giovonni Lobato - 14 years ago

Although I love the feel of your epic albums, especially This Binary Universe and These Hopeful Machines (I could listen to these all day), I think working in a newer and shorter medium will afford you the ability to become creative in different ways. Any wait is worth it, but I would be SUPER excited to see which stories you could tell in a shorter release. And the ability for you to delve deeper into other genres is phenomenal. I in no way think it will degrade your material, but rather enhance it in new and fresh ways. Thanks for all the music and all the love!
    You're the best!
    -Giovonni

  • DigiPixi - 14 years ago

I like the idea of 4 songs a year because it keeps the flow going - always wanting something new. Plus it's kind of like a book, every couple of months or year a new book comes out in a series. I think you've already headed that route by releasing THM as Side A/B in Album format. It is indeed a huge risk, but you've already dipped your toes in that deep end of the pool. As a side request going forward with this potential project, please record or post somewhere, where all the track listings were/how they were made. (IMA - Track 8, made me ROFL :))

  • Ari978 - 14 years ago

I think a mini album every year would be awesome because it would be more of a reflection of where you are at that time as an artist, but I'd hate to put too much pressure on the creative process to feel like you have a deadline hanging over your head all the time so maybe you could make it more fluid where songs get released as they work together with the overall goal being 12 songs in 3yrs, released like a collage at the end of the process.

  • mtarkhov - 14 years ago

i think you should stick with albums anyway, but try to throw some more music while people waiting for the album. maybe some re-recorded unreleased stuff, movie soundtracks, just some random tracks that wont fit album concepts.. etc. thanks for creating poll dude!

  • Chelsey Bigland - 14 years ago

I'd prefer waiting a good 3 years for your work. I have a whole mound of your other music that I can enjoy in the meantime! BUT, on the other side of the fence, I like having a taste of how your music is changing; not having to way 3 years for it. I don't know!! I can't decide!!

    How about I just say that you do whatever is comfortable for YOU, because that's when it's really enjoyable; for both the audience, and you. c;

    Keep up the phenomenal work!

  • Jason Kiger - 14 years ago

About 9-10 years ago Public Enemy talked about the music industry heading this way but they didn't really follow through. They released one or two EPs (even with a bonus DVD) and then rushed out 3 albums in 2 years. Not sure why.

  • jeremy Alexander - 14 years ago

i vote to release at live gigs, especially the full band. A great opportunity for a more personal experience with the music. What if BT put his album in your hands himself. =WIN (or something to that effect) ;)

  • K4 - 14 years ago

BT please don't do it... i want physical CD every 3 years, its always something special.

  • Jason Kiger - 14 years ago

I think more EPs would be good, just use the tracks that don't fit your album. Not saying to make a "concept" album but something to that effect. Then put out the other tracks in between.

  • Jason_Martino - 14 years ago

This is very good and original idea! I hope you will be able to release 4 songs EP's yearly because there's no life without your new music, mastermind!!

  • JulietteT - 14 years ago

If the reward of waiting is an album like "These Hopeful Machines", I definitely like better 12 song BT album every 3 years, because it's DEFINITELY worth the wait.

  • Missy Melody - 14 years ago

I would rather want to wait for the perfect song then to hear an ok one every month ;) love Missy

  • Cezar - 14 years ago

Good music should be collected, but those who enjoy trance need new songs all the time. Give us more!

  • Brandi - 14 years ago

I'd rather have perfection over something you rushed to get out...Its obvious how much work you put into the last album....give me more live shows in between and I'm ok with more every couple years ♥

  • Priscilla - 14 years ago

quality over quantity, any and every time.

  • Robin - 14 years ago

We would all want new songs every year but I think it's selfish for us to ask you that. You are a great artist and we don't want you to be pressured to make music. We wait 3,4,5,6,7,8 yrs and it is always worth the wait. (for example, Peter Gabriel! Yes it's me who clapped so hard when you mentioned Peter Gabriel at MacWorld.) Thank you so much for your thought! All of us fans appreciate it!

  • Dante - 14 years ago

An EP yearly would be awesome!

  • Jonathan - 14 years ago

I like the one album a year idea. It gives a chance to soak in the awesome sounds and savor them a bit longer. Could you imagine Christmas 4 times a year? We would take it for granted and not appreciate it as much.

  • Francis - 14 years ago

I'll be happy with four songs a year, but I look forward to many remixes :)

  • Fabio Stein - 14 years ago

Hard to say... you do know how to tell a story with an album (which is very rare to find, in dance music today), but there is something very special in the tunes u release as singles (Rose Of Jericho still touches me very deeply).

So I vote for an album, every so many years, hoping you release most of the tracks as singles first...

  • Volker Dassler - 14 years ago

OR ––– a new single every 3 months???

  • Leon - 14 years ago

BT, love your stuff. Probably listen to at least one track a day. Although I would enjoy hearing new songs every year, it's quality over quantity so I can wait 3 years for your next amazing album.

  • NeonNocturne - 14 years ago

I can agree on both sides but a polished 4 track EP would be quite suiting. We have seen where longer tracks/compositions can lead ( This Binary Universe ) and I believe that taken from that result I can only wish for more.

  • Hiroko - 14 years ago

Yes more often the better! It would be nice if u can release at least 2 albums a year?! Is this too much work for you? x h

  • Angela - 14 years ago

Hmm...I don't suppose we could have both???

  • jeremy Alexander - 14 years ago

*Tips glass* here's to making dirty, filthy step beats when your like 65...every 3 years my man! let the marination process commence!

  • Sue Max - 14 years ago

Yearly would be great! But you can only work so fast, so quality over quantity. :)

  • DJ Calzoni - 14 years ago

BT, you made an epic album. I feel that your style of music is better suited for a giant album. Of course I would love to hear new songs every year, but I think that your style of having everything flow together is just so amazing. These Hopeful Machines was a masterpiece, and I hope that you continue to create music in that way.

  • Andrew - 14 years ago

A song a day for the rest of my life would be wonderful. BT, get on that! :P
