Jimmy - you just lost AGAIN - in the court of public opinion. Grow up and you and your car will get some respect.

  • John - 14 years ago

Congrats JOHN...you now have Braggin' rights!.Way to go Man!

  • John - 14 years ago

A big thank you to Gold Eagle for nominating my car for August's "Cool Rides". Also, my kudos to Kent, Juan and James for the selection of their fabulous cars. As Juan said, the selection of the "final four" is indeed an honor in itself, all of the cars are deserving of a round applause.

Cool Rides come in every age, shape and size. We are all car guys and gals in spirit no matter what we drive.

    Enjoy the ride.

    :-)

    Thanks Marcel

  • Marcel Manzano - 14 years ago

Let's keep it friendly folks. Congratulations to John and the rest of August's featured rides.

Like Juan mentioned, ALL featured rides get the main prize of $100+ of products and other goodies, the poll is a bonus intended to be fun.

September's rides will be up shortly! After looking at the rides that got picked, it has some VERY different "Rides" that will have folks with very different opinions. Let's keep it respectful!

There you go, Jimmy ~ read Juan's comment. There's a man. Learn from him.

There's not much "COOL" in a '54 Ford with a Chevy engine in it, either. All that is, is a shell of one car stretched over another car, because YOU didn't want to take the time or expense to put the car back to original condition. Why don't you try RESTORING a car (instead of making a carved-up street rod) before you criticiZe 10 years of someone else's dedicated work? I would place that 1970 240Z beside yours on ANY type race, and win money on it when it beat the paint off your 350 Chevy (and yes, I'm including drag racing). The Z was a better car than the '54 Ford, and THAT's why it won here. And with your attitude, I'm not surpriZed if the Z owner had more friends than you do. Grow up and learn to be a better loser.

I have personally seen this Z and the color is Sahara Gold, exactly as it came from the factory. The photograph makes it look yellow, but it still looks better than all the other cars entered here this month.

And by the way, the term "COOL" means "I like it". That's completely subjective. This contest each month is about the car YOU WOULD MOST LIKE TO TAKE HOME WITH YOU. The readers made their choice, and your Ford/Chevy (altho beautiful) didn't even come close.
And I find that VERY cool!

    Well guys,

It gives me great pleaseure to congratulate JOHN and his 1970 Datsun 240 Z.
I was just happy to know that my car was even chosen to be in this contest.
Although we all had given it a good try to win, we all tried to ralley all of our friends
to vote for our cars, but hey (JOHN) won fair and square...it was a long, hard run.

The way I see it, the goodies that were sent all us contestants is worth way more
than a shirt with flames on it. A lot of the stuff we recieved in that box is no doubt
useful for us...Well over $150.00 worth of stuff, so i am happy with that and I don't
    mind taking 2nd place.

And for JAMES and KENT, you guys have great looking cars as well.

    Congratulations again John!

A Datsun 240Z owner with a "bunch of friends voting for it every day"? He must have one "Cool Ride"!

  • @ Jimmy - 14 years ago

Very narrow minded of you Jimmy. "Cool Ride" is subjective, just because post-'63 isn't YOUR idea of cool doesn't mean it as to be true for everyone. I personally voted for the post '63 Chevelle because I love American Muscle cars from late 60s and early 70s.

I also LOVE the new Camaros, Z06 Vettes and Challengers... far from '63 but I think they're super COOL!

I also like duallys with Aztec prinesses on the hood, bet that makes your blood boil :)

  • jimmy voodoo - 14 years ago

never knew a pee yella datsun we ever be considered a better ride than a classic american car. in no way is it a cool ride. the 54 ford custom is a cool ride. isn't that what the contest is called cool rides online. i think the datsun had a bunch of friends voting for it evey day. nothing is cool about a post 63 car or truck period.

There's no Z like an old Z. The first ones (1970 model year) were lightweight, nimble, and quick. The 2.4L OHC straight-6 engine had 9:1 compression, twin SU carbs and delivered 151bhp thru a 4-spd syncro gearbox, providing 8-second 0-60 and 120+ mph. The car was sleek, very well balanced and water-tight, which was rare for a sportscar in 1970. Disc/drum brakes were more than adequate for spirited street performance. The car sold NEW for less than $3400, leaving a lot of pocket change to soup it up with. 300bhp was possible with Webers, headers and cam, giving the car a power-to-weight ratio of less than 8 to 1. 240Z racers (in C Production) actually beat a lot of A-Production Cobras and Corvettes if the pilot knew what he was doing. Sharp, Morton, Brock, Fitzgerald and Newman knew exactly what they were doing.
John's car commemorates the great iconic 240Z of 1970. The car was an automotive wonder. Ask anyone over 50!

  • Rick - 14 years ago

Each of these cars looks to be a worthy recipient of an award/reward of some sort.
The advantage goes to the Z Car since I have been privileged to see her in detail at
a recent car show; and I promise everyone, the picture doesn't begin to do the car
    the justice she deserves!

  • bob - 14 years ago

I also liked the 23 Ames Ford. Reminds me of the Flintstone car. I ponder if it stops the same way.

  • bob - 14 years ago

The 54 Ford is bagged with a 350 Chevy engine. Nothing is as it appears.

  • Eric - 14 years ago

I've done much the same restoration to my '72. I bought it new then drove it year round in Toronto salt. There wasn't much left to work with.

  • Frank - 14 years ago

Only 10,000 1970 Datsun 240Zs were made., to see if the car would sell or not. Only 7,000 of them came to the USA. They became an outstanding sales success; Japan couldn't make enough of them to fill all the orders. By the end of 1970, a used 240Z was worth more than it had sold for new! Datsun never expected any 240Z to last more than 10 years, and rust issues usually ensured that. Today there are probably fewer than 3,000 1970 240Zs left 'alive'. John's has been stripped down to the last nut and bolt and completely restored. It is completely roadworthy and John could drive it to California and back without hesitation or concern. It's a perfect time-capsule from 1970.
