While in Afghanistan today, Stephen Harper said the country is "no longer a source of global terrorism". Do you agree with him?

Afghanistan is "no longer a source of global terrorism"... sure, because they're busy fighting and killing us, but as soon as the US leaves, it's just going to go back to the way it was... I'm married to a soldier who's spent seven months in Afghanistan... It's not a pretty situation and security there has absolutely deteriorated...

oh and 'watchful', here's a fun fact: Canada was never in Iraq. We're not the states. We went to Afghanistan, not Iraq.

    Senators
Having watched more of Evan's program, and his discussion on senate members, I am very concerned about how senate members get into the senate. It seems that they must be Conservatives, 80+ years of age or defeated in the recent election (some under 40 years of age), each being able to collect a very lucrative income & pension over the years (whether or not they attend senate meetings).
I have understood for many years that the Senate is an extremely biased group of appointees. primarily made up of doddering old men put there by the current government, as some kind of compensation for their years as MPs.
I completely resent that my tax money is going to support these individuals. They need to shape up or ship out!!

I don't see that Canada, the US, Britain or any western nation can make any dent into the very troubled ways that the mid-eastern countries (including Afghanistan) govern their countries. The conflict between the extremist Taliban and the moderate Muslims has been continuing for CENTURIES, and why do we, Canadians, have the presumption that we can change this in a relative few years? We cannot suddenly impose western democracy on them. I understand that there are many Afghanis who are desperately seeking this change, but the western world cannot do this, it has to come from within.

Afghanistan, will always produce terrorists as long as the taliban's idealism still exists, but there is no question in my mind that it is no longer in any major danger from the taliban, the people, as seen on the CBC's programs have embraced freedom that the taliban had never showed them, and would never let the taliban, or any extremists take back control, terror attacks won't stop anytime soon, but the mission in afghanistan is over and a success.

well, yes, i agree, but it sounds like he and bush and blair got rid of the "terrorist menace"
in fact that is not true; the truth is that there never was a terrorist menace in that country.
terrorism is carried out by individuals, who at times have mobilized others to jump on their bandwagon.
remember the mau-mau of the fifties?
blacks in east africa would come in the middle of the night and decapitate whites and stick their heads on poles for all to see the next morning.
and who are we to foist our "values" upon the afghan peoples?
    are we really that pure?
we send soldiers to that country so they can get killed or kill themselves.
and who are we - canadians - to think we can "solve their problems" when so many countries over centuries have tried and failed?
gtf out of afghanistan, canada and start looking after the crippled men and women who are returning after signing up for your fgailed mission.

It almost appears as though if there were no "wars" happening to detract from the troublesome economy, that somebody with an agenda would surely manufacture phony excuses to create one - for shame - why not look after their own countries first - lots of problems that need solving right here at home!

When will these pumped up 'good samaritans ' from the Canadian & US gov'ts realize every country has surely a right to formulate and realize their own agandas for their own peoples? Seems to me Afghanistan is no more a threat to Canada than was Iraq; again they missed the boat on Pakistan which appears to be a launching pad for various groups of possible terrorist threats!
