Municipal utilities: Will their numbers grow?
The big utilities have been unresponsive to the nation's desire and need for a faster move toward renewables. This is leading to a grassroots push for local citizen control of the electric utilities. We will see many more munis form in the next decade or so.
Most city electric system infrastructure is so complex and intertied with regional transmission that it's almost impossible to unwind and form an independent muni. The numbers of munis will stay about the same.
Solar and wind farms will cause a resurgence of centralized power in remote areas. This in turn will lead to greater dependence on regional planning and operations rather than municipal. The numbers of munis will stay the same or decrease.
